I thought it was dumb to use nongreasable ujoints and stick them next to the cats, and to still be using a multidecade old engine design with barely enough power to push a wrangler around town

Mud is still porous and "Breathable". I'd guess they went with Zirconia Sensors because that is the most common and most cost efficient. Also, less expensive to "go with the flow" when they switched to Bosch FI.
