Default weak keyless entry/alarm

Is it normal in Disco I (1996) to have a weak keyless entry? In other words, I have to be really close to the car for it to work. I replaced the batteries on the remote control, and check the unit in the passenger side footwall (made sure the connectors were clean and fitted tightly). Almost seems there is not enough transmission power to get to the little remote on my keychain (or vice versa I guess), unless I am a foot away from the car.

Thanks!

Chelo

Read my post from the other day. This might be your problem...bad antenna in the ECU. I have to be inside the car with the remote w/in 2 feet of the ECU in order for it all to work properly. Dealer recommendation is to replace the ECU. 300 Euro ($365 USD) dealership, whatever you can find on eBay or $93 USD from Tidewater Rover.

I just got back from the dealer. Here's the lowdown, the ECU still has a fault. The "cable" the service manager mentioned is the antenna on the ECU. The antenna is the faulty component so I'm still going to replace the unit. If the alarm goes off again, then I can reset it with the remote. The dealership was able to program a single remote vice only in pairs. I know there are others with the same problem, if it occurs and your remote is functional, you may be able to reset the alarm by using the remote in the passenger side kick panel where the ECU is located.

chelo has an NAS 1996 DI. There is a TIB that addresses this issue. It was part of Operation Pride. Pre-Ford. I'll post the info soon.

Bait,

Thanks for offering to post the TIB. I'm interested in reading what that has to offer.

If I lock the door with the key, the horn sounds when I re-open. I disable the alarm with the remote from inside the D1. While waiting for the ECU to arrive from Tidewater Rover, I'm leaving the doors unlocked and putting a "Club" on the steering wheel. If out in town, then I lock the door. The inconvenience should only be temporary.

Joe, I doubt the same system is used in Germany. Sorry.

Bait,

The D1 is U.S. specs. I'm working on it now to take it back to Hawaii with me next year. Once I get it on island, I'll be in the same boat for excess shipping costs and dealership pricing. I won't have near the time I do now to work on the beast. I'm compiling websites and repair pages for the long term.

Well then,
The repair involves replacing the 6 " antenna lead with one that runs along the top of the dash. Reception is vastly improved. Can't post the direct TIB. But will figure something.
