Well I caved brought it to a shop
I had been needing to swap my t-case for a while now. Working 7 days a week, only having 4 hours of awake not work time a day, playing, practicing and gigging in two bands and trying to spend time with my wife, just wasn't leaving me time to do the swap.
I crawled under it, took a look and said fk that.
I called 4 shops two wanted 480 and two 650 I dropped it off today, man it feels so good to let someone else work on it, this is the first time I let someone else do anything mechanical on any of my vehicles.
Next I just have to replace my exhaust downpour gaskets and maybe 1 o2 sensor

Every time I leave town for a job..
The Discovery I breaks..
Last time it was the coolant tank.
And the brake pads in the front squealed.
Wife took it to the shop. As she said "you are out of town".
$1,900 later.
The brake pads are replaced with ALL rotors.
The coolant tank was replaced.
mind you..
A 1997 D1 is only worth about $3,000 at best with
160K miles on it.
Still-
no car payments needed.
Wife prays the truck will die.
There is no money to replace it with the new vehicle of her desires.
The D1 is good for hauling around the two dogs on the back seat on a blanket.
And if it hits a pole in the parking lot - as it has - well then
not crying all the way to the body shop.

My wife and I love ours. There are very few in New Brunswick and just ours in our area. She can haul our kids and their friends but not drive a minivan.
I work on it some but it is mostly reliable. All vehicles break down, that's the way it is. And no bank payment.

I love mine. But then again its not my only mode of transportation.
Does it break down? Why yes it does. But for the first time in many years I have a vehicle that " I " can work on with normal - non-electronic tools.
I can grease it. I can do the brakes. I am about to change the fuel pump. I swapped the radiator. All with the tools in my costco tool box!
