Just got the squealing sound this evening when taking the family out of a picnic for Mother's Day. It sounds like it is coming from the driver front fender area. I am thinking it is the front hub - wheel bearing. However I have not encountered a front wheel bearing failure in the past and not familiar with this sound. However, I do know that I have not had the front hub/wheel bearing changed from the 50K miles that I owned the truck. So, it sounds like this may be the time.

The truck steers fine, but the sound does get louder as I apply more power/speed. Goes away at idle, ie., does not look like it is the power steering pump.

Unfortunately, I am slammed with work these next few days and will not be able to jack it up and take a look at it right away. Just thought I check with ou guys and see if this sqealing sounds familiar. Thoughts please?

If you are sitting in neutral and increase the revs any sound ? Could be a belt, ilder ect. But if there is no sound stationary with revs up then you are probably right a bearing, something up front there.

I hope you are doing well. We changed the belt, pulleys and idler last year when you were at my place last year.

There is no sound from idling and rev'ing up the engine. The sound only comes when the vehicle starts moving.

 

@acg Doing well was unemployed for a bit, Disco is still running good. I would try jacking the left front up :

• spinning it by hand see if it makes any noise
• try moving it by grabbing at 9 & 3 and 12 & 6 steering locked of course - if the bearing is going you should get movement
• Check your brake pads they will make that kind of noise when they are shot

 

I'd be checking the front drive shaft. Sounds like a dry cardan joint to me. You folks out there get more than your fair share of rain/moisture...and if the vehicle sits prolonged for anytime afterwards or doesn't get lubed more than normally...bad things happen.

I've replaced about five front hubs on our Dll's and all of them were unnoticeable while driving, even on my wife's 03 with semi-normally tread pattern. When ABS light went off, checked codes...eradicate sensor code...bad hub. Had mudders on my 01 and one actually failed completely, caliper only thing holding wheel assembly on, before l heard any noise at all.

But like Richard says...best way to know for sure is jack it up and apply procedures mentioned.
