Default What Else on the 60k List is BAD for my D1

94 Discovery D1 46,000 miles

Mike gave me this list when I first introduced myself

ORIGINAL: Disco Mike

I question the mileage, way to low for that old of a truck.
You have alot of work to do on this truck before you use it much in the form of fluids and things.
Not know what has been doneand when, plan on doing all this list, if you need help or have question get back to me and I will walk you thru it.
Good luck with the new truck.
Mike
This is the parts list for a 60,000 mile service or a high mileage used truck, the way I do it.
1 Oil filter, K&N 3001 or Mobil 1- 301
1 Air filter
6 Qts of engine oil
12 Qts of ATF
7 Qts of 80/90W synthetic gear oil, 85W/140 for HD use
3 Pints of synthetic Brake fluid
2 Qts of synthetic Power steering fluid
2 Gallons of OAT, orange coolant, also called Dexcool

1 Bottle of Lucas Power Steering additive
1 Bottle of Lucas Transmission additive
1 Can of Spray Carb. Spray
1 Can Of Brake cleaner
8 Spark Plugs, I use Bosch Platium Plus 4's
1 Set of Magnacor 8mm plug wires
1 Serpentine belt
2 Bottles of SeaFoam gas additive
1 T/Stat
1 bottle of WaterWetter or Purple Ice
Hoses and belts, as necessary

60,000 Mile Service or Major Service for High Mileage Used Vehicle just purchased

Bleed the brakes
Flush and change the power steering fluid adding one bottle of additive
Service the tranny adding one bottle of additive
Change the coolant and t/stat
Do an engine flush before changing the oil
Do an induction cleaning
Clean the throttle body
Add fuel additive to full gas tank
Change both of the diffs fluid
Change the t/case oil
Replace the plugs and wires
Replace the air filter
Lube all the drive shaft grease fitting including the 2 slip shafts
Do full inspection of brakes, hoses, bushings etc.

Hopefully I didn't leave anything out.
Dexacool I found out in another post is a NO NO

What else on this list is a NO NO????

I realize he probably just cut and pasted the wrong list..

Well here is my input-
If you need a oil additive then you need a different oil, so no oil additives.
Stop leaks are ok in small amounts, no more than half a bottle in anything. (trans, power steering, etc)
Engine flush, can be good, can be bad. Its a crap shoot. If your engine is really sludged up it will break it all loose and you will have to remove the oil pan and clean all the gunk out of the oil pickup screen. If you dont you risk oil starvation.
On the other hand if it is not to bad then it will do a good job of cleaning the engine.
If you just switch to full synthetic motor oil it will slowly clean as you drive. Diesel motor oil is highly detergant too. So either will work to clean as you drive.
Personally, I wont pay $15 for a oil filter when a $5 oil filter does the exact same job just as well.
Just my $.02

Matt-I use either a Mopar, Purolator, Bosch or NAPA filters.
I had stumbled upon a web site where a guy used every oil filter that he could get on his car and then opened each and every oil filter after 3,000 miles and what it boiled down to was that 90% of all oil filters are made either by Purolator orWix. That included K&N and Mobil 1 oil filters.
Your cheap no name ones were made by a no name company, but the major brands, including quick lube brand oil filters were made by Fram.
I did not bookmark the site and boy to I wish I did.

One other item to change on my list, since your truck is a D1, go to ATF for the steering flush, only the new Rovers use power steering fluid.

As for the filters, I see Spike likes to go cheap and that is OK, but if you go on-line and read some of the oil filter tests/studies, you will find there is a difference and I don't believe in cutting corners with a Rover, it can turn around and cost you a lot more later. Also the 2 filters I recommend are usually in the $10 range.

I buy what I can afford and what I believe in.
And here in Grand Rapids the Mobil 1 and K&N oil filters are $12 and change, add tax andyou can call it$15.

I do not know for a fact that the oil filters that I buy do the exact same job.
When the Pep Boys in my area went out of buisness I bought the last of their Mobil 1 and Purolator oil filters.
40% off oil and 60% off oil filters.
I just used the last Purolator oil filter that I had. Normally I buy Mopar oil filters at Wal-Mart when I buy my oil.
7 quarts of Mobil 1 and a oil filter is $40.

Mike's list is a very important list we Disco owners must have and appreciate!
Hats off to you sir Mike .
Of course, "fine tuning" of the list is needed to update the differences in the models of our trucks.
D1 vs D2 and maybe diesels vs gas engines.
The updated 60,000K list should be made into a sticky thread.
Cheers.

Spike I appreciate your statement of buying what you can afford, I am on Social Security Disability with a fixed income few can survive on, especially while driving a Disco, but after reading a number of detailed oil filter tests, I have opted to pay the difference hoping they make enough of a difference to save me more money down the road.

Mike I respect that you want to use the more expensive oil filter.

Keep in mind that I will never recommend to anyone anything that I would not use/do in/with my Rover.
As often as we disagree I think that we are a great team when we work together.
