Here it is. It’s the bell housin front end, and at the bottom of the pic is where the oil pan attaches to it. Something is missing... I believe the flywheel is what I see spinning inside there while the engine’s running? I’m freaking out a little bit.
Quick backstory:
Had some gasket work done on my Disco at a local indy shop about three months ago. I’ve done everything myself for years but don’t have the time anymore, so I entrusted them with fixing all my leaks this time. Suddenly my engine was a lot louder, with a tap-tapping noise that increases with RPM’s. They had put spec weight oil in, way thinner than the 15w40 I’ve been using for years, and when I finally switched it back to my oil, sounded better. But I only got to listen to it with my oil in it to see if the problem was fixed for about one day before... I was t-boned and declared total loss.
Heck no. My wife and I took the settlement, bought it back salvage, (btw I have aftermarket jumpseats that are partially installed and the adjusters didn’t care a bit, for those of you who wonder about getting in a wreck with mods; I’m in Arkansas with Farmer’s), and paid cash to fix it. $10,000 total repair job. Rear axle, both driver side doors and some framework.
Two months go by and I just got it back last night finally. Immediately on fire-up, three amigos + brake light come on (I already fixed the SVS and just power bled brakes) and also the tapping noise is loud.
I crawl under the truck just now and see this hole and I’m like 😳
What even screws in there? I can’t find it in my D2 workshop manual. What fluids would be leaking out here, if any? And now I don’t know who has this piece and is to blame, the mechanic or the collision center...
Thanks a lot, sounds good. For documentation purposes, cover plate part number is FRC7706 and it runs between $12-16, plus shipping. Three bolts are M6 x 16mm part number SH106161L.
Just in case somehow someone else loses their cover plate... don’t know who took that off but how annoying to have someone else jacking up my stuff. I guess this is what I get for taking it to someone else to work on. Already had to take it back twice and fix a couple things myself the mechanic accidentally messed up, one being an improperly attached SAI hose that threw a code. But I don’t blame them too much: It’s a freaking princess.
That cover plate normally is left off the car so oil can drain out from leaking seals. However, it is available should you want to fit it temporarily to keep water out of your bell housing when you're fording streams. It isn't recommended to leave it in all the time.

Is this serious? lol I've never heard anyone say anything like that about this inspection plate.
No that plate should always be in place, it is an inspection plate and if the rubber inspection plugs are missing a location to drain from if you ford really deep.
