Default What oljohnboy said....

oljohnboy made a good point, simply asking the questions is the key. If they are honest service managers, they will let you see what they use (bulk container with brand, weight, etc). As a former employee of a centre we had an open floor policy and allowed our customers into the service area, even had a welcome sign. We also allowed our customers that wanted to use a specific brand to bring in their own oil.

The cheapest one, he signs a contract, once that contract is up he will go with the lowest bidder again, which may be Joes Oil Company next time.
They dont care what goes into your truck, they are out to make money and they will use whatever oil they can get for the cheapest price, its just business.
It is the same thing will coolant, I used to sell bulk coolant, I used to sell to alot of dealers, once the car was out of warranty they would use my coolant in the customer cars because it was cheaper for the dealer but they could still charge the OEM price.
All good points here Spike. Now........this does not make me feel good about getting a free oil change at my local BMW dealer in a car with 10K on it. Darn!

The thing about oil is that if you use cheap (but decent) oil just increase your drain schedule to the old 3000 mile/3 month and you are fine. A synthetic just allows you to go farther between changes. I change mine at 5000 with synthetic but I suspect if I were to get it tested I would see that I am dumping perfectly good motor oil. I may actually send my oil in for testing next time just to see what is up.

Or from a different stand point, why spend $100 plus to change your oil at a dealer when you can buy a good filter and synthetic fluid for around $35 and save a bunch.

Yep when you DIY you can choose the best of the best, even if it's overkill it will still cost less.

just called, my stealership uses conventional Mobil 10W/30. he said they specifically do not run syn in Discos, but they do run syn in some of the other Rovers.

what do you think is the best choice for conventional Mobil?

Clean High Mileage? https://www.mobiloil.com/USA-English...ge_10W-30.aspx

Mobil Clean 5000? https://www.mobiloil.com/USA-English...lean_5000.aspx

With conventional just use whatever decent brand name oil is cheapest the weight is more important than brand. I would not put in 5W-30 though this time of year. 10W-40 or 15W-40 is a good oil weight. Make sure you change regularly too, don't get behind with conventional.

That being said Mobile One is on sale at Autozone and you can get 5 quarts 15W-50 and a filter for $35 (or the big jug for $30 with filter). Don't fear the synthetic though.

Neither.

Mobil clean is not the best conventional oil you can get. Mobil shines in synthetic not conventional.

Two of the best conventional oils are Pennzoil yellow bottle and Valvoline white bottle. Choose either in the 10w40 weight.

Since you're running conventional make sure you change the oil no longer than 5000miles. Try to change it every 3000.

Also, Shell Rotella T 15w40 white jug is a conventional oil and will provide better protection/cleaning power than the ones mentioned above. It is a HDEO (Heavy Duty Engine Oil).

I use valvoline white bottle in my toyota corolla, 5 quart jug $15. The Rotella 15W-40 is a good conventional choice for your Disco's engine.
