Default What is this sound?!

Hi All,

First off just want to say I am a new Disco owner. Very excited to get my hands dirty and do my best to keep my Disco running for years!
Just picked up a 2004 Disco 2 with 130k+ miles on it. Its been very well maintained. Just had an oil change about 1k miles ago.

The only thing that Ive encountered that might be an issue is the following noise coming from the engine. I am attaching a link to the video so you can hear what I am referring to. Please let me know your thoughts!!

Thanks very much!!

Welcome,

Based on the frequency, I'd say its in the valve train. Lifter, rocker, etc. Get a stethoscope and see if you can locate where on the engine it is. I would also check the oil pressure, both hot and cold. Post back what you find.

Also, get an OBD bluetooth so you can see your actual engine temp. Looks like you're up to temp in the video, is the noise there on a cold startup?

Almost sounds like a bent rod knocking. It's definitely not a good sound. I wouldn't drive it any more until you get it figured out.

My 2003 sounded exactly like that after getting to operating temp.

Does this sound come on immediately after a cold start, or does it have to get to temp before hearing it? My 2004 sounded just like that when it hit 140 degrees on the nose. Mine was a slipped liner.
