What would cause exhaust to come out the oil filler hole?

If you stick the new separator in with the longer nipple sticking up it will be easier to remove next time.
Maybe you want to remove it and then put it back at every oil change just to keep it from sticking.

I did, & that was the way the PO had installed the old one. It was just caked in there & brittle from age that it broke when I pulled on it.
