It all boils down to checking your grounds. By the late 70s, Fiat started playing with common grounds. A big star shaped metal bit would be bolted to the car at a convenient place and everything would plug into it as the ground. Works a treat until it wiggles loose or you do some work and disturb it or get the car repainted and the techs don't reinstall it right. It's an easy fix, but can be a bear to diagnose if you are not sure what you are looking for, Everything on my Fiat was individually grounded.

1975 Renault R17 Gordini. I owe my entire mechanical aptitude and development to my first car being a French POS. It broke down frequently, despite only being 7 years old, and at that age I certainly couldn't afford to have anyone fix it for me so it was either figure it out or walk. Hemi-head, 9:1 comp, L-Jet FI, 5sp, and a ginormous power top. This one isn't mine, but apart from the rocker graphics it's otherwise identical. I would actually love to get another and search frequently, but there were only a few thousand brought into this country in the 70s so I'm afraid the chances are slim to none..

New Jersey you say? That's a car I would really like to see. I'm over in Bucks County if you ever want to take it out wand meet up some day.
