250 miles and the computer still isn't ready on my '97.

call me nuts, but I think it depends on the sensor,

I imagine drive cycles as how often you start the engine, then drive around.

I can't imagine it taking more than 10 start/drives, tho'

(rave - workshop - page 196(pdf page)) says (1 drivearound for emmissions error)

My 97 D1 had sat for an extended timeframe. I did a lot of work on it and then took it in for PA Emissions and inspection. They told me to put at least 50 preferably 100 miles on it and bring it back. 150 miles or so on it over the weekend, it sailed right thru the emissions check.

It depends on the sensor. When I bought mine, two sensors/systems weren't ready and those had very specific drive cycles - something like hard acceleration up to 35MPH, hard acceleration up to 60, soft acceleration up to 35MPH, etc.

Anyway, according to RAVE (for D1):

DRIVE CYCLE - ADVANCED EVAPS
  1. Switch on ignition for 30 seconds.
  2. Ensure that coolant temperature is less than 140°F (30°C).
  3. Start engine and allow to idle for 2 minutes.
  4. Perform 2 light accelerations (0 to 35 mph with light pedal pressure).
  5. Perform 2 medium accelerations (0 to 45 mph with moderate pedal pressure).
  6. Perform 2 hard accelerations (0 to 55 mph with heavy pedal pressure).
  7. Cruise at 60 mph for 5 minutes.
  8. Cruise at 50 mph for 5 minutes.
  9. Cruise at 35 mph for 5 minutes.
  10. Allow engine to idle for 2 minutes.
  11. Connect TestBook and check for fault codes.

The reason motor vehicle dept tells you to drive about 100miles, is because they don't know the specific drive cycles per model, so it's assumed that you would have gone through some of these driving conditions over the course of that many miles. However, depending on where you live, you might not.

One more thing: Are you doing this for your own diagnostics or to pass emissions?

If the latter, then check with your state (or on your state's DMV/MVC website) because they might allow one system to not be ready and still pass. For example, here in NJ any car model year 1996-2000 can have up to two (non-continuous) monitors (like evap system) "not ready" and still pass. Model year 2001 or later can only have one (non-continuous) monitor "not ready." Obviously, any continuous monitor must be ready.

It's to get the emissions test.
So far it's always been "systems not ready" or some such.
I tried to do the advanced evap drive cycle today, it's amazing how difficult it can be to do that, at least in the order listed. But I came pretty close, with just a couple of stops during, at lights. But for the "5 minute" ones, I did a full 5 min for each of the 3.

I doubt it has to be in that order. I believe as long as each condition is met, you will complete the cycle.

For me, the two monitors that returned NOT READY after reset (I replaced the upstream O2 sensors) were the Evap System and SAI. This cycle will ready both of those. But again, I can't imagine I did them all in that order. I just felt confident that living in the North NJ/NYC (suburbs/city combo) area, I would experience at least one of those during the week. I did.

3 am on a Mon out in the country and nobody will be on the roads and you can "drive cycle" till sun up.


SO glad we dont do emissions testing.
