I'm interested to find out what your pre-trip check lists are? Anything from hitting a local trail, dispersed camping, or long "overlanding" style road trip (off road and pavement). Also, what parts do you make sure you have in the truck for roadside or trail repairs? I'm sick of being worried so much that it takes away from my adventure! If something breaks, yes i want to be able to either limp home or apply a band-aid, but i just don't want to let my anxiety over SOMETHING going wrong ruin the whole trip!!!!

@Rove Again AAA that will come up a forest service road I get 320 Km of towing twice a year and as long as the road is gravel they will come to me.

Other than that

• Remove the lock nut on the spare and tires if fitted and replace with a normal nut - your average tow truck can not remove those if the key is lost or damaged they have nothing that big
• Tire plugs and insertion tool
• rad hoses
• heater hose
• fuel line hose
• Thermostat
• zip ties
• A bunch of hose clamps
• Spare fuses, relays, brake light switch
• Seals All, thin sheet aluminum, self tapping bolts, tin snips
• Serpentine belt
• Basic tools, socket set, torx set, breaker bar
• Grease and grease gun
• 18 x 18 inch square of 3/4 plywood for a jack base
• quart of oil, gallon of AF, brake fluid, PS fluid, 1 Long brake line
• roll of duct tape and some muffler tape

All the above fits in a big tool bag and 1 box for the most part.

I carry a tow strap, soft shackles, normal shackles, a high lift and if solo a high lift winching kit with chains - too much distance lost with rope.

Pre trip is easy

• crawl under and hit all the grease points
• check for leaks - ok new leaks
• tire pressure and examine tires
• oil and Af levels
• Belt and fan blades
• check over hoses and vacuum lines
• in my case primary intake hose as it always seem to come loose
• Air filter
• Spin electric fan
• Washer fluid

Then each morning

• check oil and AF levels
• Check tires and tire pressure
• check under carriage for new leaks and stuff caught up
• clean windows

I just came back from a 1000 mile trip. 200 miles of it was offroad. I like Richard's list more than mine, but I am noob and haven't learned to carry all that.
Here is what I checked:

• Power steering, oil, coolant or transmission leaks
• Grease both shafts
• Check air pressure - do chalk test if needed
• Check tightness of lug nuts
• Check condition of shocks
• Check oil, power steering and coolant levels
• Validate that there are no errors with OBD fusion
• Check all lights for functioning

Here is what I brought on that trip.

• AAA gold membership

• Boulder tire deflators
• Battery powered worklamp
• Two 400 lumen headlamps
• Recovery strap
• Small shovel
• Emergency battery powered jump starter
• Spare rotoflex

• Hi-lift jack
• roll of duct tape
• RYOBI battery powered impact wrench and sockets
• OBD fusion app on Kindle

I have a toolkit, and a Triple AAA card, but I am on highways, so I don’t bring spare parts.

At any given time my D2 has:
Jack (bottle, hi-lift and sometimes floor)
jack stands
Viair Compressor
boulder deflators
Full Socket set/wrenches, baby sledge (never know when something needs some convincing)\
Camp chairs
Fly fishing gear is always loaded up
Hunting gear (depending on time of year)
Spare change of clothes with multiple pairs of warm socks
hammock
I will carry spare driveshafts on more demanding wheeling trips (rear spare has a good condition rotoflex)
Fluids (some of all of them - I check oil and Coolant levels before trips and each morning while on trail)
Breaker bar
Duct tape
Rain gear
muck boots
shovel
axe
moving blankets and towels (moving blankets are perfect for throwing down on the trail to lay on or extra padding under the tent tarp)


I need to put together a better assortment of fuses/relays and spare wire and connectors. Was out off-roading last Saturday with a Rover group and one of the D2s XYZ switch died mid trail, someone had spare wire and we just bypassed it completely to keep moving and get him home. I'd also like to pair down the amount of tools I carry for weight purposes.

full tank, flaps down. throttle up. Good to go. I just keep 2000$ in a special " " Disco tow account, just in case......

I check the oil level and take a peek to make sure the overflow tank looks normal.

That's it.

Haven't been stranded in 13 year 200k miles.
