Wheels
So I'm trying to find a set of steel wheels on a budget for my 2000 Disco 2. I like the Terrafirma wheels but they do seem a bit pricey compared to Rough Country for a simple black steel wheel. I know the bolt pattern is 5x120 but is that just the metric measurement? Could say a 5x4.72 pattern work?
I have read that 5X4.75" is close enough, and I would think so as 0.030" is about the thickness of three business cards. However, I can't say that I think 5X4.75" is any more common that 5X120mm. About all I was able to find was the Terrafirma wheels if you are set on steelies. And I have looked pretty hard.
But...
Unless you are going to do really hardcore trails I think the forged aluminum 16" wheels are probably plenty strong. And in my area they have been relatively easy to find at very good prices. My Disco arrived with some awful cast aluminum 22" wheels. I now have three sets of four 16" LR Disco 2 wheels from the local classifieds. Two sets of Mirage and one set of Stratos. I paid $100 a set for two of the sets. The third set I paid $300 for, but they came with nearly new Toyo Open Country tires. One of the $100 sets came with some half used Bridgestones.
And no, I am not a hoarder. Well maybe I am but I have reasons. I got the first set with the Toyo tires to replace the wheel/tires that came on the car. It was half the price of just the tires so I grabbed them, at the time thinking I would upgrade to steelies at some point and just swap the tires over. Research (next paragraph) gave me confidence in the strength of the forged aluminum wheels, but I wanted a matching spare. I had not done enough research yet to realize just how many variations there were, so when I saw a set of five spoke LR Disco 2 wheels for $100 I grabbed them thinking they were the same as mine. Got them home and realized that I had a set of Mirage and a set of Stratos. About 6 months later I found another set of four for Mirage for $100. Oh...And I also had to source the correct lug nuts. Got a deal on ebay for 50 of the top hat style for $50 shipped.
I was concerned about the strength of an aluminum wheel, but additional research gave me confidence that, at least for my driving, I am not likely to destroy a forged aluminum wheel. I think in general if you have the money for the suspension and power upgrades needed to make the factory forged wheels the weak link, you won't bat an eye at the Terrafirma price. Also, based on my local ads, I could have 5 sets forged wheels for the cost of the Terrafirma stuff. It may be different in your area.

There aren't many close to me selling wheels for Land Rovers. Closest is about 2 hours from me on the other side of Houston and closed on my usual off days. I'm keeping my eyes open and if mine weren't bent and had the chrome peeling I wouldn't even worry about it.
