Default When is enough enough?

I’m blessed to have two thriving pick-n-pull yards within 20 minutes of my house and both seem to get a Disco on about a quarterly basis. I’ll usually go by as soon as they’re placed to get after things before they get rained on.

Nowadays I’m not really on the hunt for things like I was when I first got our Disco. Now it’s more for the curiosity, stumbling upon a random factory accessory, or just overall interest in seeing how these things are put together without risk of breaking my own.

I’ll usually pick up a couple easy things that either break often/easily, and/or are NLA.

Case in point: headlights.

They take two seconds to remove, are NLA, and though I’ve never had one shatter, I can see a well placed rock destroying one pretty easily.

So now the title of the thread…how much is enough? I think I’ve amassed something like 5-6 pairs of these headlights over the last few years. If I don’t take them, because of how remote these two PnP’s are, they’ll most likely get tossed out with the carcass.

I have untold number of interior clips. So many trunk handle Land Rover badges. Interior switches. Dumb amounts of perfect horn buttons. Etc etc etc.

We’re committed to Brady the disco for as long as gas is sold. So part of me keeps harvesting these parts thinking… someday the supply of junkyard discos will dwindle, and someday these parts will be scarce. But also maybe not.

Relatable?

@Brandon318 very relatable until we moved and down sized housing I had a ton of parts. But we have no breakers anymore everything ends up at auction is most sent to the US.

Hilarious!

I suffer from the same affliction. Multiple spares of everything from Pick n Pulls all over NorCal. Its like an Easter egg hunt every time I get an alert from Row 52. Interior, exterior, under-hood - all in great condition.

Was blessed and had a large home with plenty of crawl and attic space to squirrel stuff away. Life change (divorce) a few years ago and moved into a much smaller place. Thankfully (or maybe not), I have some warehouse space available. The ex, who now lives in AZ, has some of my stuff in her garage. Who does that???

Will eventually have to pare down - who really needs spare headliners, seats, steering wheels, 5 pairs of taillights (no cracks), dashboards, etc.???

Brandon, how many sets of wheels are you up to? LOL!

Oh, and to answer the question, "when is enough enough"? I guess we'll eventually find out...

Sorry to hear about the life change!

Feels good to know I'm not along in my low key parts hoarding... Makes the wheels you gave me feel all the more valuable knowing what it must've taken to part with them haha.

All good - we're both doing great!

I'm in double trouble. I have an '05 GTO -- and enough spares to make another car and a half!

Let me know if you need anything.

When I started on D2's in 2013 I lived within 20 mins of two LKQ yards, they would get 2-3 D2's per month for a while, that's why I started selling the inline kit. So many were unwrecked I knew it was all blown HG or cracked blocks. Moved up to VA and Family down in SC so so add the three in NC I have to drive past and the one near me and the count is 5, and lucky if we get two every quarter between the 6 of them. Good news, more being drive, less getting junked. But lots of NLA parts. I am also fortunate to live near two D2 breakers, so they help with parts I am missing. Drip rail trim is the holy grail for now along with the tail door trim and other brittle plastic stuff. For personal use I try to keep one of everything. On the business side the inventory is much larger for the in process trucks. I keep a spare trans, transfer case, and I think I have 4 or 5 engines. A half dozen rear bumpers, two fronts, Etc, etc. Hate to see the stuff get put in the crusher. I have had to start turning down free trucks! (Property is full and I have two stored off site). I need a bigger place....

It looks like I’m in good company. I have quite a few P38 parts, as I bought a parts car and stripped it pretty clean before junking the shell. I wish I had more Disco parts. Like Richard, junkyard Disco’s are really rare here.

Yeah, its a shame to see such clean examples at wrecking yards - especially here in CA where they are completely rust free. Although I am not seeing nearly as many as I used to 5 - 7 years ago.

Enough is when you run out of space, money, or time. I like to collect little things, stuff I never see on ebay. You just never know.
I will say I will always go when a truck shows up at my local yard to practice taking it apart. I will leave the parts organized on the dash, trunk, or backseat; depending on access. This gives me a chance to learn and may make the day better for the next guy.

For all those little parts, I guess the question is, can they be easily made if the supply runs out?

Hilarious. Same here.

Until your attic, or shed, or whatever is full.

Or you die.

My attic is basically a disassembled pick n pull disco at this point.
