I got the 36 mm wrench and the water pump tool this weekend to do my pas pump and could not figure out how to use the water pump wretch with the 36 mm. Where does the water pump wretch go? Is it on the front or back of the pulley or fan?

I got the pas pump done no problems with the fan still on along with replacing the rear wiper arm and replacing the piece under the throttle body where no coolant was really leaking out on a regular basis but it had dexcool crusted around it, so definitely a productive day, it's just a bit funny when you have the right tools for the job but can't figure out how to use them.

It would really be cool to get a picture of the wretch placement on the write ups page.

 

The fan clutch wrench goes on the fan clutch, it is the only thing big enough for the wrench.

 

Correct. It is the large bolt behind the fan. It is reverse threaded. Put the wrench on that bolt with the Serp belt still attached. Wack the wrench toward the passenger side of the Rover(Left) with a 2/3lbs sledge hammer. It will come loose. Your are basically making a hand impact wrench with the hammer. It worked great for me.

 

The fan is not reverse threaded on a disco 2, it is a normal thread.
The 36mm goes on the nut behind the fan. If you have 2 pieces (as in this example http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/web..._T|GRP2078____) , then the smaller tool with the wider mouth hooks onto the bolt heads on the pulley and use that to lock the pulley. Attach a 1/2" breaker bar to the square slot on the tool.

 

Did you buy a fan clutch wrench, or is it one of the "loaner" tools from an auto parts store?

Everything these guys have said above is absolutely correct, so following their instructions should be easy, but if you have trouble getting the fan clutch wrench to grip the nut on the fan clutch, pull out a ruler and measure it. My experience has been that the "loaner" wrenches are usually bent/stretched and so the 36mm tool is ofter more like 38 or 39mm. I had the same problem with "loaners" from 3 different stores, so I suggest just buying one if the first set of "loaners" are junk.

 

Get this wrench from Orielly's... Performance tool Wilmar Ford Fan Clutch wrench. It is 36mm fits the Discovery viscuos fan nut. I used it to remove my fan and install idler pulley's. $19.99 is a deal and you will always own it.

Never in question of where the 36 mm goes, but the water pump wrench that looks like hook was what eluded me.

 

You figured that out? Hook one of the bolt heads and then use it to hold the pulley still.

 

The universal clutch fan tool goes right in front of the 36mm (towards the engine against the pulley) and hooks onto the bolts on the pulley. The clutch fan tool holds the pulley while the wrench loosens the bolt.
