Default Where to get service and other questions?

Ijust bought a used 2001Disco LE Series II w/ 135K that appears to be in tip top shape. This Disco has a very nice background check along with new U-joints, o2 sensors, thermostat and new tires. It was bought from atrusted source. That's just a little background on the vehicle. I have a few questions that I hope someone on this board can help answer or provide recommendations.

1.The closest Land Rover dealership is over 2hours away from wherewe live. Is there a good website to use that identifies local auto shops qualified to work on Rovers?

2.Where canyou buy atiming belt? I was unable to find that part on Rover Connection.

3. When should someone replace the timing belt on this model?

4. When should someone replace the water pump?

5. What is the most common thing we need to beprepared to replace?

Are the new u-joints in the double cardon with zerks?
1. Don't know where you live but Yelp is very big here in SF. You can also look for a local Rover club and ask them where they go for service.

2. You need a timing chain. Atlantic British is you best place for parts. There are others but start with them for new parts. If you want names of some great used parts guys I can give you those too.

3. dunno

4. dunno

5. Do a search for the following: New owner, head gaskets, DiscoMike's 60k service, the 3 amigos, rebuilt front driveshaft

You MUST use premium gas too.

Welcome to the forum

Just a few things to know before I answer your questions 1-Premium gas is a MUST. There's a thread on the first page that has plenty of details if you'd like to read that. And 2-Check that the U joints in your front driveshaft's double cardon have grease fittings. If they don't you'll have to have it rebuilt eventually.

Also, you should check out DiscoMike's 60k Service list and consider doing some or most of it. Preventative maintenance is key in these trucks.

Anyway, on to your questions
1-I haven't heard of one, but I'm sure if you want you can post your general area, some one on this forum is probably close to you and may know of some one.
2-Atlanticbritish.com is usually the best place to go for parts. That or roversnorth.com or as you said rover connection.
3 and 4 I'm not positive about, some one else will chime in I'm sure though.
5-Stupid things for the most part. By "stupid things" I mean lock actuators and power window motors ("stupid things" are most of the reason LR has such a low reliability rating. Since when does wind noise have anything to do with reliability anyway?) There are a few things that are commonly replaced, or commonly fail or commonly whatever, but lack of sleep is rearing it's ugly head on me right now. Other than that not much.

Did I miss anything?

EDIT D2G beat me to almost all of this

Thank you very much for your feedback. Read below......

1. I will check the local Rover Club.

2. Timing Chain-Got it! I have saved Atlantic British to my favorites.

3. Understood

4. Understood

5. I will do the search you recommended.

Regarding the gas-I kinda got the hint after reading the "regular vs premium" thread-thanks.

Thanks for the info! I am notmechanically inclined but I have always tried to take very good care of our vehicles. I'm looking forward to learning more about our new Rover-I just hope I can find someone near that is comfortable servicing it.

You can try searching for the RAVE manual, but the site that has been hosting it has been down for a while. It's the workshop manual in pdf format. It can also be found on eBay.

The timing chain and gears will last the life of the engine.
Replace the water pump when it goes bad.
www.cartalk.com, click the "mechanix files" link, enter your zip and recommended shops will come up.
You do NOT need a Rover shop.
Headgaskets are the most common repair on a DII.

Good deal-I'll look for it.

Can you go ahead and attach that link to the site that's been hosting it?

> So you never replace a timing chain like you normally do witha timing belt? That sounds like a plus.

Replace the water pump when it goes bad.
>Do you know generally around what mileage the water pump needs to be replaced? Also, what are the indications?

Headgaskets are the most common repair on a DII.
> Do you repair them, for example, every 40K miles, or do you just wait until they go bad?
