Default Whine, could it be ACE?

I am looking to buy a 2000 disco. Everything with it is pretty sweet except it whines. I am an ex-audi tech so i usually take this to be power steering although it isn't associated with turning the wheel. it does whine faster with engine speed. I have read on the this forum somthing about the ACE system which works off the power steering fluid. I have no idea what this system does but I assume whatever pump it works off of can cause this power steering type whine. I am also assuming this means there is air in the system causing this whine. Any ideas and costs associated with fixing this system? Thanks in advance.

First, yes some ACE units whine, some of those can be quieted down.
ACER does not run off the power steering but off it's own , much high capacity pump.
ACE is a huge plus because it helps compinsate for some of the top heavy feeling you might notice if your drive the curves hard at high speed, removing 1 full G force from the body roll.

Thanks mike. So what do you do to quiet it down? Find a leak? Replace the pump? It whines really loud.

Are you buying this from a dealer, if so I would make the sale contingent on the repair of the problem, most likely a new pump.
Worst case, if you buy it and flushing the system doesn't help then a pump will be in order.

Just thought this might help.I have a 2000 D2 with ACE, the sound from the pump is more like a moan than a wine. At 70k I replaced the pump trying to find a wine i thought was from under the hood. Well the brand mew pump made just as much noise as the old one. I think that pump is now around 800 bucks, so inless you can narrow the noise down its a costly try.

The tubing kit on ace sometimes get bent out of shape, there mounted on the frame with rubber grommets and if the steel tube touches the frame you can get a whole assortment of noise everything from a banging noise the a load whine. scott

My 2 cents - I purchased my 2000 about 3 years agowith 57K on the clock and didn't like the whine (had a '95 D1 previously, so it was apparent to me). I now have 126K and I have really enjoyed the handling and I don't hear a thing. My advice (experience only, no pro training) is to look for obvious contacts between the tubing and the frame, checking condition of grommets, then just enjoying the handling benefits and save your money for the 2 replacement air springs you will be buying at some point!($129 each at many places + install labor)
