Default Whining

I have 1999 Dico II with 121,000 miles on it. When it gets up to 55mph it has a loud whine while I am accelerating but stops when I let off the gas. Am I going to have to replace the transfer case soon?

As far as I know they are original. i just bought her about a month ago. Are the u-joints hard or expensive to replace?

They probably aren't the original or they would have grenaded the transmission by now. They aren't too exspensive but dependin on your tech background you can drop the drive shafts and bring them to a machine shop and have the new ones be pressed in. If you want to do it your self you need to have a clamp. U-joints need to be replaced around every 60,000 miles or so, so your definitly up for a swap. I would suggest not driving the vehicle because they can seize up and destroy your tranny. Replace them as soon as possible. Thats my best guess as far as the whining goes. Replace the u-joints since you have to anyway and get back to us afterwards if your still having probs.

When was the last time you changed your diff and t/case fluids as well as lubed the u-joints?
There is a possibility you are about to loos a diff, they are a weak spot for Rover.
You might want to send me your tele number and I'll call you, walking you thru what to check.

I'm going to try to do all that this weekend. I am hoping it is not something major because I cant afford to put too much money into her, and I'm not much of a mechanic myself. Will I need a pump or something to change the t/case fluids?

I havn't worked on a D2 but I needed a pump to get the fluid up into the transfer case fill plug. Kind of a hassle and can be messy.
