Default White Sheppard/Blue Devil Stop Oil Leak

Just curious if this stuff works or will it harm my engine?

Unless there is a mechanic living in the can, it's not going to help cure the underlying problem - just mask it.

Some products contain chemicals that react under certain conditions causing the seals to swell up eventually, plugging up the leaking seal.

This is what this product does. Never used it, can't attest to it working. Others have though. Best to look to see if it can have any 'adverse effects' as well as the potential benefits. For instance, stuff that plugs holes in radiator systems have a habit of clogging up things. Conversely radiator flush, can find holes you never knew you had.

I agree with you guys that this probably will not fix the problem, which I am suspecting is a front cover and oil pump replacement job. The oil is coming from my oil filter it looks like and it is very gunky in that surrounding area.

I will replace cover and pump eventually when I can afford what looks like to be a $600 parts, plus my weekend kind of job.

I guess my real question is, can this hold me off for a little while and will it hurt my engine. I have read that the Head Gasket and the Coolant Blue Devil products cause more problems, but with the Oil Stop Leak, it has only resolved or have done nothing. If anyone has experienced either scenarios, please let me know what you experienced. Thanks in advance

I used it the 99 I accidently put Synth oil in the Rover and it leaked a bunch. I drained it and put Dino 15w40 back in and it still leaked a pretty big amount. I put some blue Devil in it and it immediately stopped leaking. I have since changed the oil without adding anymore and it still doesn't leak, Maybe a drop here and there. Mine is a 99 with 231000 it will probably leak a bit.
I have no idea if it hurt anything but it still runs good and No leak. This fix probably won't last forever so I'm good for now.

I would say it shouldn't hurt it, but a mechanic friend once told me, just remember that when you put that sort of stuff in, it doesn't just swell the leaking gasket, it swells all of them that it comes in contact with. Is that bad?? Who knows for sure, but it's something to think about I guess.

I've used this product and was not satisfied with it. it didn't work what so ever. i don't think it harmed my engine but it definitely did not work. honestly take the twenty bucks and put it towards replacing the gaskets or hoses or what ever it may be that you have leaking

White Sheppard/Blue Devil Stop Oil Leak i've used it for an engine oil leak and a transfer case leak, small leaks on both vehicles worked both times.

why would you be "replace cover and pump eventually when I can afford what looks like to be a $600 parts, plus my weekend kind of job."

unless the cover is damaged it should be more like $150.00. 120 for the pump, 10 for gasket, and 20 on coolant.

I am not sure how you priced that and where, but if you have additional info, please let me know.

I am replacing the front cover because it looks like it is leaking where the oil filter goes in and I am assuming that needs to be replaced. Oil pumps have been ranging in $450-500 range. If you have a cheaper resource, please do share.

You shouldn't need to actually replace the front cover...unless the oil pump has failed and chewed through it, in which case you'd know. The oil pump is available separately at Rovers North, Atlantic British, British Parts Utah etc. Any of the normal aftermarket Rover parts places really and it's about $100.

The leak on your cover is most likely just a normal o-ring, gasket, or seal leak. I would pull the cover replace the oil pan gasket, all the pickup tube o-rings, all oil filter adapter o-rings, front crank seal, timing chain, oil pump, and all associated gaskets while it was apart.

I did all of that on my 03 for way less than $450
