There's been a lot of negative posts lately...people fed up or giving up. Thought I'd see why others took the plunge. Remind us why it's worth it. My reasons are as follows:
1. Wanted one since 1997 but couldn't buy because it was either too much or I was overseas.
2. Wife wanted mid size SUV w/7 seats.
3. Wife has a stigmatism and can't see well at night UNLESS she's higher than oncoming headlights and the windshield is fairly vertical.
4. LOVE the looks!
5. Last model Disco I could work on myself.
6. Capability: rain/snow/sleet/hail/floods won't keep me from reaching my destination! Tow capacity ain't too shabby either.

 

I like the oil spots in my driveway and the empty wallet.
Otherwise I enjoy the trail capability.

 

I couldn't afford a Defender.

 

I am crazy, I don't like having any money. Love driving my Rovers

 

I made and offer of Three Fiddy and the guy said yes.

 

Have wanted a Niagara grey DII since 99.
My suburban is too big for the trails around here.
(Body damage on Sir A suggests he might be as well)
I need 7 seats.
Can't afford/rationalize a Pentastar JKJS74. (Rubicon, 2012 and up)
The. Jeep Commander is IFS.
Payment was less than $5 a day.
I love the smell of the interior.

 

I loved the first disco we had (2000 model) that was traded in 09 for a VW. When the opportunity came up to buy my in-laws 2004 model with 48k for a great deal in 2011 I had to jump on it. I have loved rovers since I was a teenager, and like ZG I cannot afford a defender...yet.

 

Nothing looks like a Disco - wanted one after first sight. I think it still has a modern look even over a decade later. The sitting position is great!

Had a Defender (D90, 1984). It was a bit raw for my needs and the only time it would fail to start was when I needed it most (brutally cold). It was a diesel. I know, I know... but they are not for me.

Now, if a 351 or a chevy 350 (ugh) would bolt in and this thing had decent bumpers...

 

I narrowed craigslist to:
Under $3000, 4x4, 2000 year model or newer, leather, and under 100k miles.

The only thing on the list was a few land rover Disco's. I bought it and now I've got too much invested to ever let it go. Kind of like my wife.

 

I wanted something to have fun with and had decided on a used BMW GS. You know the dream - cross country rides to whatever remote location that comes to mind, maybe detour to Alaska while camping and making friends along the way. After some soul searching and seeing a few friends get hurt, I concluded that luck does not always favor motorcyclists and that my young son and wife would miss having all, or most of me around. I still wanted something fun that could tackle adventures, and soon started looking at Discovery's. I like fixing things and with every other vehicle on the road being a crossover, the Disco stands out. When I dropped my son off at school today the older boys were anxious to see our Disco and my son was beaming with pride as the teachers asked him about his Safari truck. Kinda validated the whole Disco decision. Now it's time to shop for more parts...
