I'm kinda the same with less usual vehicles. Have a Jaguar XFS Sportbrake as my car and a 03 D2 as my fun vehicle. Also used to drive Series and Defenders on a couple of farms in New Zealand way back. From there I wanted a Land Rover and made that happen a few years ago.

Oh wow where to begin. My wife loved the style of the D1 and D2 and always wanted one. And then the older ones where such a classic look and style. And what a smooth ride even when your suspension sucks lol still beats anything I have had in the past from new to used.
They are majestic rugged and have a style for the ages.
As far as reliability no worse than any other vehicle. And really do like working on it a labor of lover really.
Even now our daughter wants one for herself when she gets her license.

In my life I have owned:

55 ****** jeep
1979 FJ 40 landcruiser
1991 nissa pathfinder
1991 jeep wrangler
2002 4 runner
2007 nissan xterra
4 D2 landrovers - 01 thru 04

I never gave the others much thought. They were just transportation. My discos just fit me.

I enjoyed my Gen 1 Montero's, but I agree all the other 4x4 vehicles I've owned were just transportation. LR's have a soul and I try my best to keep as many as possible on the road!

I got my S2A 26 years ago. I originally thought that the "newer" LR's would never be as capable, and their reputation is unreliable. After a number of years on LR forums (mostly the local British Columbia club forum, until a few years ago), I clued in that they are the best engineered 4X4's, and if willing to maintain them properly, are actually very reliable and long lasting. I got the P38 a little over 3 years ago. It's the best driving vehicle I've ever had, both on and off road. The first 1 1/2 years were nothing but trouble, but I finally worked out the kinks left from neglect, and it's worked pretty much flawlessly since. When the D2 came up a little over a year ago, for a price I couldn't say no to, I bought it as well. It also is a better driving vehicle, on and off road, than any 4X4, other than the P38. They are a dream to drive and, easy to work on. The Disco only took a few months to work out the previous neglect, which would be it's advantage over the P38. I hope to keep these "modern" LR's as long as I've had my S2.

The aesthetics of a D2 are unbeatable IMO. They're a perfect blend of rugged and refined where youre not scared to use them for what they're built for and you know they'll get you there in style.
I had a 94 manual and now have a 2004 automatic with the LS swap. Between these two I really appreciate being able to work on everything myself. There's very few maintenance tasks that I'd rather have a shop do.
They're not practical cars but they give you all the right feels and are reliable if you maintain them properly. All in all it's the feeling you get while driving it, pretty amazing cars.

Not many owners realise that having non-greasable ujoints adds strength to the driveline. The transfer case is gear driven. No chains, like a ten speed bicycle. Downhill assist works great, when used properly. The window to door ratio makes visability better.

Echo what everyone else has said. I like having something that I don’t see another one at every stop light. They look like what an SUV should look like. My parents have owned many SUVs and cars over the years and they didn’t really get the Disco until they drove it.
