Default Why So Many Part Outs??

I feel sad every time I see a new Part Out thread on FB or something in the Marketplace simply because the thing needs head gaskets.
I just stumbled on a '99 that needs HG's so they're parting it out...... <shakes head>

One guys has "too many projects" and no time for the Rover but will somehow have time to dismantle and ship parts... LOL

Just me but if it came down to it, I'd fix the damn thing, sell it whole to someone that wants to fix it or lastly part it out if the issue was beyond normal repair, like cracked block level stuff and I couldnt sell it whole.
But thats just me...... I believe these trucks are just a little too unique to toss them out so easily. A little love goes a long way

Yeah, it's a shame. I'd love to find one not too far away with good paint.

@NewToTheTwo Age, at 16 plus years old, a lot of folks figure it is not worth the money. Mine would have been done, if I would had to pay to get head gaskets done. 4000.00 plus tax and enviro fees works out to about 5000.00 up here plus a 2 month wait to get it done,it is simply is not cost effective I can pick up an LR3 for 7000, fully serviced by a independent LR shop.

For all the frustration of the one head bolt that is a cast iron bitch to torque, I still under a grand even with a new set of heads. But I am willing to do the work lots of people can not.

If I had space and money I can buy these for 1-2 gran in Canada.
The more part outs there is the more unique they will become
I bought one last year 99 disco
was surprised by the amount of people that came for parts and I also shipped a bunch
picked it up for $800 cdn quickly made my money back with window motors locks ace pump alternator brake booster power steering list goes on
I ended up with a cdl and after 2 months a guy came and grabbed the disco for $400

but most that I have seen they say. Oh just needs head gasket really are beat up and interior not in greatest shape.
People usually let these things die long before it actually dies

$5k is a motor swap - I cant imagine why anyone would charge OR pay $5k just to have HG's replaced??

Rust is a big part of it in certain areas, the D2 frames do not fair well

@NewToTheTwo in US dollars for a short block no labour sure. A used engine up here is about 3000 IF you can find one, there are very few Discos at wreckers.

Our labour rates are a lot higher too, they average about 120.00 an hour for a reputable mechanic. Specialty shops are higher, and it is all taxed, parts, labour plus environmental fees.

All the parts for my rebuild, except the heads had to sourced out of the US, so I get to pay at least a 3rd more than you would

In CDN dollars add at least a 3rd more, for any rebuilt engine:
  • Long block from AB for me would be 7200.00 US or about 9000.00 CDN
  • Short Block for AB 5200.00 or about 6875 CDN then about 700.00 for a good set of used heads re-surfaced and re-finished
  • Short Block from Turner 6410.00 CDN with a Crower cam
  • Long Block from Turner 7950.00 CDN with Crower cam

@redwhitekat yea I was pretty shocked at 1600.00 I just would have paid the money, just because it is January/Feb but the one shop that does them orders everything from the dealer.

i thought about this a few times if my engine ever goes and I’m in a good financial situation would I get a long block. I think I would like to however they might still have the same issues and still have the same shifty mpg
