wierd humming vibration at idle
Hi,
94 disco 92K miles. Last couple of days noticed a vibration I can feel through the parking brake handle and the brake pedal that only happens with the car in gear at idle. Goes away if I just barely press the gas pedal (50-100rpm above idle). Any clues? Doesn't seem to affect the driving at all. Its kind of hard for me to open the hood and take a look because I don't have anybody to put the car in gear while I listen. I'll do that Monday, but thoughts are appreciated.

I don't know about the motor mounts but I had a similar issue on my 99 discovery. As it turns out I had a loose heat shield above one of the catalytic converters. I just removed the thing and there is no more rattle or vibration. So, if you cant find anything in the engine I would give the exhaust system a once over. Hope that helps.

If it is the mounts, is it the kind of problem where I should stop driving IMMEDIATELY, or can it wait a couple of weeks?

ok so apparently the vibration was from the alternator. It went out yesterday and now with the new one in, no more vibration. Is this possible? Also, my tranny fluid is really low. Could the cold weather (10deg F) drop it below the dipstick. And the coolant reservoir has a leak since the alt went out. Could the engine somehow have overheated? I had to drive it 2miles with the car sputtering as the last of the battery died (the alt went out on the road and I drove on the battery charge). I was thinking (far out there) that somehow the engine and tranny over heated and blew the coolant reservoir and burned off tranny oil in 10deg weather. Any chance this is possible?

not likely, but if your alt locked up, the belt might stop and then no water pump. With no power, the gauge might have not been working. You really shouldn't have pushed it that hard.
What color is your reservoir? If it is black, replace it.

That little alternator vibrated your whole entire Discovery? Never seen that before in any car/truck. So you were driving one day and your Disco sputtered and died. Dead battery and obviously it was because the alternator wasn't charging it, right?
Let us know how this all plays out.
