Wierd start ritual..Ideas?
The last year or so (minus the 6 mos it was down) I have had an odd start issue.
When I try to start on first attempt, will not fire. When I move the key back to the off position and back to start,, always,,always fires on the first hit.Problem occurs @90% of the time. If I keep hitting the starter without the ritual, It will eventually fire on the 5-6th attempt.
I have new engine and alarm computers and same thing. When I could locate the RAVE cd, I remember something about some sort of impulse coupler which I am pretty sure my 96 DI in the garage does not have...? Had the dash all apart looking for anunrelated ground problem and phantom spyder.
confused..

Well this is a totally different vehicle but, I had a 5.0 Mustang a few years back and it did something kind of similar. Turned out to be the ignition module. I doubt your situation will be the same but it's just something for you to think about.
OK another thought popped into my head......When you turn off the ignition then back on, I think the fuel pump will prime itself again. Maybe the fuel in your line is draining out some how (losing pressure) and cycling the ignition switch is getting fuel in the line? Or maybe you have a weak fuel pump?
Start with a clean fuel filter, then check the pressure on the fuel rail after it has been sitting over night. If there is little or none then your valve at the fuel pump is allowing the fuel to drain back into the tank instead of keeping it up in the rail so your engine will start.
New filter, and I have waited until the fuel pump cuts out from its initial prime. Fuel PSI is good and I am stumped. I will check the fuel rail again do a dance or something....
Tomorrow before starting your truck, turn your key to the start position, without starting the engine, and turn it off, do this 3 time then start you engine. if it starts up properly then it is the valve in the fuel pump.

Could not a faulty (leaky) injector cause the same issues...as well as have the same symptoms as the fuel pump valve?

Disco Mike may be on to something. Last summer the truck died a couple times. The condition would only occur with 1/4 tank or less and hot OAT. Allowed to cool and back down the road. Thought it was a coilpack, spyder....nope just replaced the filter (first time) and seemed fine.
I just replaced a fuel pump in my Suburban w/75k and am trying to convince myself that is not it! That was not fun with about 40 gal gas in tank.
If I hold out for the 3.5 hr (80MPH) journey to the dealer I might have the Recall for the tank performed. I wonder if they will give me a break on labor for the pump replacement? Or am I dreamin again!
