Default winching

Hello, I have used my winch a few times but today I was helping a friend pull a very large tree out and something strange happened. My truck was stuck in P. I had the engine running it was in park and the E brake was on. After We had taught the tree who was boss I got in the truck to move it and could not shift out of park. Eventually we rocked the truck back and forth and I was able to shift. It made me wonder though Should I be in N with E brake on when winching as the stationary vehicle?

I would put it in neutral if possible, if in park that's a lot of stress on the parking pawl

Never use park when winching always have someone in the vehicle with a foot on the brakes.
