Default Windshield tape

Can anyone advise why someone would add tape above the corners of the windscreen? The tape is below the seal. Tape is thick and has a rough texture.

My guess is it was a feeble attempt to stop a leak. Probably trying to divert water off the roof to somewhere other than that corner. I doubt it would have worked. The roof drains to the gutter (or windshield) and then exits at the front or back. the front drain being that corner. From the photo that tape wont stop it.

Discovery 2s are known to rust at the roof line there, as well.

the tape(?) may be covering rusted out metal.

I was told it was from the last owner who had a rack that contacted that area and tape was for protection? I have looked at photos of many safari-style racks and have not seen any that would contact that area of the roof.

if it was installed improperly the light mounting tabs could com in contact around there. However that would be super lazy or a poorly made rack. All they would have to do is move the rack forward in the gutter to avoid that contact..
