Winter driving temps

In Chicago we have had temps with wind chills below 0 the last few days. I put the 195 in for these conditions. The 195 keeps the cabin nice and toasty. The wind chill makes it all to crazy to keep the Disco warm and toasty in the mornings with a 180. We have had 30-50mph winds over the last few days. When these conditions hit I slide a piece of cardboard in front of 1/2 the radiator. Extreme cold: -5 to -40 with wild chills I'll block most of the radiator. As mentioned, a winter weight oil (5W40) and an Oil pan warmer. These are not the temps to be stuck with 15w40 in the Disco. After the artic months I'll change oil to 15w40 and put the 180 back in. Majority of the semi-trucks I've seen this week have the front noses all closed up.
I can’t argue with you on the lighter oil for startup, though, and agree with it probably reducing wear. Project Farm did a video a while back checking on all that kind of stuff and they did Rotella T6 and it performed darn near as well- and better in some cases- to the high roller stuff. All this is again why I change mine in the Disco every 3k.

Wouldn't this damage your cats over time? I'm not sure why people don't discuss premature cat damage from running 180F thermostats. From what I've read, cats aren't designed for handling the less-complete combustion that happens at lower temps.
Cats almost never fail on D2's, have three over 210k miles still running fine (admittedly, not an emissions state).

I forget the code, but i was getting the tenp below opperating temp code when i had the lower temp thermostat. I did replace the temp sensor and put the higher temp thermostat in. Got the error code for low temp today, its only in the 30s. It never got over 170, which i would prefer a low temp over a high temp. Not sure the error code is a problem i need to address. Or just keep clearing it.

I had the mod set up in my wife's truck last winter. She complained that it never got warm in the cab on her short 7-10 minute drive to work even after I put a higher temp thermostat in. This year I've gone back to the original set up and she's much happier. Happy wife, happy life.
