Any experience with Amsoil? On their site the recommendation for the Discovery's 4.6L engine is their synthetic 5W-40.

As Dr. Mordo relates, other purveyors of diesel truck oil offer a greater viscosity range like the 5-40 he mentions. Using a 15-45 scares me re: startup wear. Also, is it safe to use an oil formulated for diesel in a gasoline engine?

It's certainly safe to run diesel oil. A Google search will provide zillions of people running it with no issues.

Amsoil makes *amazing* oil. I tried a couple of different types in non-disco applications and was very impressed. That said, it's very expensive and I couldn't excuse the cost. Amsoil is great, but not that much better than M1 to be worth the money.

Also, oils like RP and Amsoil pay for themselves when you run them for 15k miles. These old engines really need more frequent oil changes to stay clean.
