Default Wiper Delay

Has anyone heard of there being a delay when you first turn on the windshield wipers? I noticed that when I initially go to turn mine on there's a slight delay before they start working. Is this normal or what could it be? It makes a slight clicking noise and then after about 10-15 seconds they start up.

Your's are good! Mine take anywhere from 2 - 5 minutes!
Work fine in summer, but when temp drops below 50 F.,
are a PITA.
Think it is a common problem, but don't want to spend $200 for a new stalk.

Then spend less? Disco II wiper stalk from RoverLandParts.com

I have a delay, but if I fiddle with the stalk a bit, they'll work.

Try turning your wipers to fast instead of slow or delay and see if that changes things.

If I adjust it to a faster speed they work right away, only on the slowest setting do they take a bit to start up. I'm wondering if it could be caused by the cold though like mentioned above? After I drove around for a bit today, went into a store and then came back I tried them again and they worked on the first attempt.

I believe the delay is based on heat build up as the wiper motor works. If it is realy cold, it takes lomnger for the delay to start. That being said, it may also be an indication of the switch starting to failing.

I had it over to the Land Rover dealership today for servicing and I got the tech to take a look at the wipers and he thinks it's just from the Canadian cold weather lol. He didn't notice anything wrong with the switch and said they were working fine without any delay once he brought it inside the garage to warm up. Turns out one of my rear airbags are leaking though so it's a $677 part to fix, ouch! Why does eveything always need fixing around Christmas!? $$$

On a side note, the tech also mentioned to me that on the Discovery's there was a bulletin sent out about there being some reported problems with leaking coming from the front passenger side windshield. Because it's a manufacturer's defect there repairing the seal for free. I have a really nice tech there so he's also going to do the left side for me as well, no charge. Anyone who has a Discovery, especially '03 or '04 may want to call their local Land Rover dealership and inquire about this - especially anyone in the Toronto area! Check your interior roof for water marks, and even if it isn't leaking doesn' hurt to have the seals replaced for free!
