Default Won't shift into gear (been sitting a few months)

Haven't cleaned out the gas yet so I haven't started it (doing that today) but I recharged the battery and turned the ignition to on or whatever and My 03 discovery wouldn't shift into gear.

Also before I parked it I put on a tom woods ds and took it to another guy I know that builds ds for race cars and he told me it was balanced and correct...problem is my discovery still makes a loud noise when I shift into gear when I'm on a hill or rolling slightly so it must be something else. With my transmission now not going into gear I'm afraid it may be my transmission that is causing the loud noise. I can do most anything if only I know what I should do. Any suggestions/help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm going to go ahead and change out the transmission fluid today.

Forgot to add that before parking it I couldn't get it in low either. Any causes/fixes for that?

Engine runs very well with no codes (before I parked it) and the oil pressure shows to be in the normal range.

We had a son so I haven't had any time in a while to mess with the discovery. Now that it is getting warmer so that it isn't a pain to be out in the garage I want to take care of everything on it.

Thanks for any help

A little driveline noise is ok. If it gets worse, start checking your t-case and diffs for wear. Most get a clunk while shifting into gear.

Are you pressing the brake pedal while trying to shift it? Do your brake lights come on when you hit the pedal?

Try shifting to low with the tranny in N. Shift the diff shifter to N and try going to low. If it won't go, slowly roll the truck while trying to shift. Don't force it. If it still won't go, look into the shift solenoid. It will not allow you to shift unless it sees you are in N.

when you change the tranny fluid look at the plug for metal bits.

The key must be on for your brake lights to work, if they dont come on then you need a new brake light switch, no big deal, you can get one at AutoZone.

I don't have a problem with my brake lights

Does anyone know why it won't shift into gear when it isn't cranked? Does it have to be cranked to shift it into neutral?

It doesn't make any noise and changes gears smoothly once I'm moving but when I'm started (especially on a hill) and put it in gear it makes a loud noise

Broken CV joint in the front or broken axle. Have someone start the truck, put it in drive and look under the truck at both axles, is one turning, if so that is the one going to a failed diff.

Default goes into gear does not move

I came home parked the vehicle. came out 20min later. started the vehicle step on brake, pulled the shifter back into drive. and it nothing! at that point i tried to put the shifter back into park, i could hear the parking sprage, make the same noise as if you put the shifter into park as you were moving. I turned the vehicle off...at that point i got out of vehicle and noticed the vehicle was still rolling. so me and a friend pulled the transfer case, and noticed that it was locked in the neutral postion. so we went about reading a little about the electricial,on the transfer case, and we found out we could energize the electric motor that controls the high low range. so we did that and it did go into high and low no problem... so we got back into the vehicle and took a chance and started it up while the transfer case was out and step on the brake and put it into drive and the transmission took right off with no problem....what could we do?????

Question

What! You took the transfer case out, assume you disconnected both driveshafts. Then got into the truck without a transfer case and with disconnected driveshafts, put it in drive and the truck moved? If it wasnt' just rolling due to gravity we have missed part of the story. There is no means of propulsion without a driveshaft connected orther than gravity. Enlighten us. This is getting interesting. Phil
