Default Won't start

So, today while going to the gym about 10 miles from my house my 02 Disco died while turning into the parking lot. The only sign of trouble it gave me was a slight hesitation almost like a downshift about five minutes before this happened. I tried letting sit and tried starting it again, no luck. Tried to pop the gas tank open and it wouldn't open but the rest of the electrical worked. I have a code reader, but did not have it with me. I will be working on this tomorrow. Any guidance or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Allen

Start with the basics:
What year and how many miles?
Do you have codes if so what are they?
Do you have spark?
Do you have fuel?
Battery voltage?
Give us a list of recent repairs we are not standing there with you but would love to help however we need some more info buddy.

Thanks for the reply. sorry for the lack of information. it's an 02 with 90k. I've had it for about six months. have flushed the coolant. replaced water pump. due for plugs and wires. have them, just haven't put them on yet. haven't checked much of anything yet. Will run codes and check for fuel and spark in the morning. this is my fourth rover so i know my way around them somewhat. just thought it was strange with the fuel door not opening and no signs of it running rough up until the point of it dying.

So, are you saying the engine will turn over, just not start?
Try resetting the inertia switch on the passenger fire wall, it hat doesn't work it may be a filed crank sensor.

correct Mike. I did check the inertia switch initially. What specifically should I check? also, will the crankshaft position sensor give me a code on the obd?

Not always. Best check is put a spare spark plug on a plug wire you pull out, lay on manifold, crank. If no sparks, usually crank position sensor. Crank sensors can start going bad when hot and actually work when cooled off. If you find you have to replace it, plug in new one and let it dangle. Put every little nut and spacer back on exact, mounting is critical. See attached.

Well, I went to where my truck was parked and it started right up. Drove it home and it died while I was pulling into my driveway. Thank God for good timing. Looks like its heading more towards the crankshaft position sensor don't you think?

Thanks for everyones help so far.

Your diagnosis seems sound. Pouring cold water on the sensor can sometimes reset it long enought to drive another short distance.

I believe Lucky8 has a video on the replacement of your CPS.
