Default Won't start after head Gasket- Any Ideas?

I pulled the heads off a few month back and took them in for a shaving but never had time to put them back. I hired a general mechanic(not a rover specialist) to put humpty dumpty back together. Once done it wouldn't start and it smoked from E brake cable. I searched here and checked his grounds, sure enough he left the DS head cable off.
Once properly grounded it no longer smoked but still wouldn't turn over.

He was sure it was the starter. I disagreed but bought one anyhow.

I put the new starter on and still no turn over and the hazards flash. Reseting the inertia switch didn't help but leaving the battery cable off over the weekend did. That's where I am now
No hazards and not turning over.

Any ideas? Did the lack of grounding damage something? Is it a secerity system issue? I found in a search that it might be that so I tried the 1515. I have the origianl keys but the FOB's don't work on them.
Any help I could get is greatly appriciated.
Thanks
Cliff

I was not holding down the hood switch when replacing the battery. Should I disconnect and then try that?
It doesn't even try to turn over. It just makes a click the first time I tryt it then nothing after that but no starter movment at all.

you could try re-installing it, I had no trouble when i changed mine but others have; somehow it trips the vehicle alarm. So it could be that the trucks security system is keeping it from starting. But in the past i have usually found a single click to be a bad/lose connection.

Disable the lockout with the EKA 1515 key sequence

Yeah I had the same thing happen to me, it turned out to be the superlock and immobilizer. The flashing hazards mean that the anti-theft alarm was triggered.

Check the large ground that goes to the alternator bracket. The small braided cable on the DS head is not the main ground for the block, and will not allow enough current to pass through for cranking.

The PB cable smoking means you didn't have a ground path for the block, so it had to find the next best thing, fixing one took care of that, but you may still not have enough of a connection to enable cranking.

I followed the the negative(ground) right off the battery and it is grounded to the firewall then in continues down to the bottom of the engine bay to....nothing. Its just dangling there. Does that go tot he alternator?
As I took things apart I labled everything but the idiot who put it back together removed them all.

Yes, that should be bolted to the head right by the alternator bracket. See #5 in the attached page from RAVE.
