Default Wont start, clicking rapidly

Any ideas on a no start? When I turn the key, the dash lights flash rapidly and the there is loud, very rapid clicking. Almost sounds like a starter that does not have enough juice. I replaced the battery, same symptom. The grounds by the batter box look good. Any other ideas to point to?

I can jump it and it will start, but if I shut it off, it will not turn back on.

Any ideas?

If you can jump it I think it has to be a bad battery (even if it’s new) or bad connections/ grounds. Or a bad cable I suppose.

Starter relay issue? Swap relay and see if it does the same. Also, test the signal at the relay and test the circuit by jumping the circuit at the relay.

I will try the relay today. I hooked up a trickle charger over night and it was full this morning. Still wont start. The red LED on the dash lights up when I turn the key, I did not notice that before. Thanks for the advice.

Default Relay

I switched the wiper relay with the starter relay. No change. The wipers worked in both cases. Seems the relay is not the issue. The fusible links are visually good. The fuses are good. Which makes sense, that it seems the issue is enough power to the starter, as opposed to any power to the starter. The starter was replaced a couple years ago if that matters. Still it starts with a jump.

Any ideas on where to look next?

The starter is not getting enough juice. Disconnect the negative lead at the battery, then remove the large cable from the starter and clean the connector and mating surface of the starter. An emery board or a little fine sandpaper will work fine. This is what my '65 Mustang needed 45 years ago.

The long terminal strip to the brown + cable at bottom left of the picture and the link next above it are both overheated meaning they make poor connections. Remove, polish to bright metal including any metal under them, and reinstall tight. Better use a wire wheel or grind lightly. When possible use clean bright metal original or bronze or stainless steel bolts and washers. Also clean all other battery-to-starter connections as MLN01 says above and chassis/engine grounds.

Turns out it was a bad ground. Cleaned, snaded all the grounds and it started right up. I probably should have considered that before I bought a new battery. The other was atleast 4-5 years old, so I guess it is a fair update.
