Hello,

Drove my truck to the gym yesterday, started just fine, then when I came back out, it sounded like it was really trying to start but just wouldn't turn over. All lights, fans, heated seats, etc worked. Tried to jump start it, but no luck.

This morning when I tried again, my UltraGuage read 11.67 UG volt, but last night it was in the 12.3-12.9 range. Prior to this, it's always 14+. Newer Duralast battery that was replaced within the last year. Prior to that I had a month old Duralast that would not hold a charge after a month. Any idea what could be draining me?

could be a bad cell...
a really dead battery or one with a bad cell often wont jump

if you get it started, check the alternator output..
put a meter on the battery with it running, should be up in the 14v range.

 

Thanks. I would have thought is was an alternator, ignition switch, fuses or starter considering everything else comes on. If the battery were just dead, you'd just hear a clicking sound when attempting to start the truck

 

11 volts should start it, might turn over slow. No spin but everything works? Most likely worn out brushes in the starter motor, but you should hear the solenoid click. Use a screwdriver to jumper the leads on the solenoid - big one with battery cable to big one connected to motor - starter should spin. No spin? Bad brushes - time for a new starter. Spins with that? Check for voltage at the solenoid small wire - voltage? bad solenoid. No voltage - go upstream to relay, then to ignition switch. My daughter would forget to put it all the way in park sometimes - try that, or neutral.

 

I’d recommend jump the starter as well after charging the battery. I do it with a length of wire from the positive post to the starter with ignition on.

 

I'll work through these tomorrow. Gotta tow it to my place in the am.

And yet another battery drain issue.... they are rampant right now!

 

12.7 is a fully charged battery,
12v is considered dead.

anything less than 12v can cause all sorts of gremlins
and on some cars can damage components due to ohms law.
as voltage drops amps increase to provide the same wattage..
so citcut boards, relays etc will actually draw more amps at lower voltages. This generates way more heat.

 

Pulled plug #4 when trying to start, no spark whatsoever.

Sounds like it's not getting fuel, and there is zero fuel smell after cranking on it a few times. I crossed my fingers and beat the bottom of the fuel tank hoping to jar something loose, to no avail.

Battery voltage drops from 11 to 9 when attempting to start.

This weekend should be fun.

 

I’m confused. Does it turn over but will not start or it won’t crank at all? Cranks with no start no spark could be a crank sensor.
