Would someone please tell me what plate this is?
Hello, I am new to the Disco community and have to say, I absolutely love this website. It has taught me a lot (and saved me a lot of $) and just yesterday I re painted my fender flare and side steps based on steps inside this forum ... came out really nice, at least I think so. Anyway, on to my question ... what is this a picture of, it's a plate that sits off the transmission fluid case (02 Disco). It's leaking, is it a filter or easy fix? Thank you.
That is the inspection plate for the transfer case.
If you remove it you will see the gears in the t-case.
It can be re-sealed with RTV.
Remove the t-case fill plug, drain the t-case, remove that plate, clean, re-seal.
Let it set up over night, refill t-case with gear oil.

85w-140.
You need 7 qts to do both front and rear differential and the t-case.
You will also need a hand pump to refill the t-case.
I buy mine by the gal at Tractor Supply Company and use their house brand or Wal-Mart brand.

Use any 75 or 85/140 gear oil only for better wear protection.
Since you are new to Rover, you might want to go to my stick, posted at the top of the section and do the major service on your truck including inspecting/rebuilding or replacing the front drive shaft which is by far the most important item to deal with so it doesn't fail and take out your tranny also.

Thank you very much Disco Mike, all your posts throughout this website have helped me tremendously. On another note, I changed the oil in Washington State (Silverdale, Bremerton area) and noticed a lot more leaks lol should I have put Mobile 1 Synthetic 10w40 instead of the 10W30? If money is not an option, what is the best brand and oil weight to use for my area? Thanks so much! --Ken
