Couldn't agree more!

I've seen a few of those cheap "farm jacks" fail under load and even bend!

The nice thing about the hi lift jack is the handle is removable so it also doubles as a breaker bar!

 

While they don't look nearly as kewl as a hi lift jack hanging on the side of your roof rack, air jacks don't require lift points and get you out of trouble much more quickly, and without getting dirty.

And yes, right now the jack would be for winching and not jacking.
When we got stuck this last spring I could have gotten us out had I had one.
There was a tree close enough that I could have hooked to the truck and the tree and yanked us out instead of walking 5 miles in the rain and leaving my wife and kids in the truck with the hand gun for protection.

There was a small spot with water, was not deep, but it was rutted and we rode up onto the front and rear axles so all four wheels were off the ground.
It was wet sand, I shoveled and shoveled and shoved fallen tree branches under the tires but I just could not get her out.
I would scoop out the sand and it would fall back in place as fast as I shoveled.

The first rule of offroading is dont go alone.
But these are just 2 tracks.
But some guys with Super Swampers dug ruts in the water for some poor unsuspecting sap like me.

So you dont have to have rock sliders to lift your truck.

 

dang, they've went up in price. I got my hi-lift from TSC years ago for under $50.

spike, if you're going to be using it for winching I would get the one with the longest handle (can't tell if the are the same or not from the pics) Even winching a 3,500lbs jeep with a hi-lift can be difficult at times..you need every inch of leverage you can get. I've used one to winch a full size chevy and it took everything I had to push the handle.

I have used a Farm Jack to pull fence posts together to tighten up electric fencing, but never to pull a truck or tractor.

 

I've always used a 48" but I believe the 60" comes with a longer handle. Also the 60 doesn't need to be reset as often when using it for winching...just something else you might want to consider.

 

I think the 60" would be way to big and heavy for most of what I will be using it for.
Thats 5ft long, add a jack base and the jack would be taller than me!! Literally!
