Default Yak 1A with extensions: Mighty close to that sunroof!

For anyone with 1A towers / extensions: What have you done to get a little more clearance for the rear sunroof? I'm simply not willing to risk a bump shifting weight enough to break that glass with the roof open. I'm thinking of making spacers from 1" square tubing but wanted to know what others have done. Right now I'll be putting a Rage basket up there, but a Rocket Box is in my future, too. I realize I could just leave the roof closed with the power to the rear switch locked out, but with four boys in the back I know they're going to want the roof open at times, even if all they can see is the rack / box.

a better option is the thule super high mount set up. i tried the yak deal and i did not like it. with the thule i have full use of the rear sunroof.

not to hijack your thread, but would either of these 2 solutions referenced be a good fit for my thule hull-a-port pro kayak carrier? (worked with factory crossbars on previous suv. so, it's a clamp-type setup).

thanks

absolutely!

the mounts just clip to the rain gutters so you can set the cross bars at any distance you like for your kayak.

mine are carrying a roof basket with a high lift and shovel mounted to it. as long as you have the mounts and the cross bars the amount of crap you can mount to your roof is almost endless

Hey Joe,

I have the Thule cross bars with the tall feet/towers. Do you just use the two bars with feet on each end? I had talked to a tent guy about mounting a tent using these as the support base and he advised on using 3 or 4 bars.

i think he is correct.

i believe with 2 sets of bars your max weight is like 140 or 150 lbs. so if you are looking to do a tent up there i would defiantly add more support. also check what the max weight for the rain gutters are. i am not sure, but the most weight i have carried is just camping gear and water jugs.
