Default Yes another ticking question

I have searched but can't seem to find a condition like mine.

04 D2 with 62k miles. only has ticking sound when first starting up after sitting for a while then when it gets up to temp it goes away and sounds very normal. I thought it may be a manifold leak because it goes away after the engine is warm but it really sounds like a lifter noise to me. I also just change the oil and used a land rover filter and castrol 15/40 sync blend and it seemed to make it louder. I'm not sure what was in there for oil before I just picked this one up 3k miles ago and the guy had just 60k done (not to say it was done correctly but that's what he said) so I wanted to at least change the oil when I started to hear the tick on start up. When I purchased it was not ticking on start up it sounded normal.

Because the oil is too thick and is not getting circulated enough when cold. You are in NH where temps are still freezing. I still say go by the manual for your oil. If I were you, I would be using 5W40 or 10W40 at the most in the Winter. Those cold starts are a real killer for engines, and you are running oil free with it that thick for a bit each time you start it and until the oil becomes warm and flows easier.

I have read some people running 0/40 oil. I will dump the oil today and switch to 5/40 and try that.

Try the 5 W 40 Shell Rotella full synthetic. I use this oil in my 2004 DII, it is a diesel engine oil.

You are running the right weight oil, so don't let that be a concern.
Read my sticky at the top of the D2 section regarding valve train noise.

Mike I have read that but the noise got louder when I changed the oil which using to heavy of oil would make sense. I will try 5/40 before I tear engine apart. I have hear Discos with the well know valve/knocking noise. My noise disappears when engine gets up to temp.

Changing oil in a few hours and will update later and see how it is tomorrow morning

Mike... remember that his is 5 years newer than yours and much less miles I'm sure. The 40 weight will still protect against heat the exact same way no matter if it is 0, 5, 10 or 15W40, but the 5 or 10 will flow much easier when cold. That is the point of lower viscosity for colder climates, which I know you know. To me, if he just has a "dry tick" when the engine is cold, and the coincides with him going to the heavier oil, to me it is a no brainer.

X2: what is the last thing that changed before the tick started?

Changed oil with rotella t6 5/40 this afternoon and started up took about 30 sec before tick started to quit down, drove home about 2 miles pulled in driveway and it sounded like it did the day I picked it up. True test will be tomorrow in the morning. Will post update tomorrow when I get to work.

Well it's not 100% but it is much better than with the 15/40 oil. Does not take as long to go away with the 5/40. I'll give it a few days and see how it is
