Default Yet another 'should I buy this/what is the value' thread

So now I'm obsessed. I've had my Grand Cherokee WJ for 10 years and want something different. It's always gotten me where I wanted, but I've always wanted a LR. I've braced myself for the potential maintenance issues. I'm not a hard-core off-roader, but some of the hunting and fishing spots I frequent can get hairy. My Jeep's always gotten me through, but rather than invest in a lift on the Jeep, I've decided to move to a LR.

So here it goes - an acquaintance has an 03 Disco II SE7 with 130,xxx. He has done all major maintenance on it, including head gasket, oil pump, water pump, timing chain, coolant lines, front propshaft, temp gauge. It's also lifted with BFG MTs on it. He is a LR guy, and has had several, including Defenders. I have no reason to doubt his word, and believe that he takes care of his ride.

NADA on it is at $8,425. I think he is going to price it closer to $10K. With the mileage, the maintenance, and the lift/tire combo, what do you think is a fair price?

The other option is an 04 SE with 88K from a dealer. No repair history, likely be faced with the above listed repairs sooner or later. And, I'll want to add a lift and new shoes. Price $9,950 (before add-ons).

The thing I really like about the 04, is the locking CDL and the mileage. The think I really like about the 03 is the history and known maintenance.

One other thing, how much should a head gasket job run at a reliable indy shop?

Flame suit on.

HG is 300 of parts , 200 of machine shop, and 12 hours of shop time. Many in the $1700 range.

In addition to NADA, also look at KBB.com, and statewidelist.com, which indexes craigslist for a whole state, and gives search output by metro area. Lets you know what's out there.

CDL can be added to the 03, but pricey.

On the 03, run the vin thru the dealer service dept. and see if it is on Rovers hit list for possible failing oil pump/engine failure.

Thanks Mike. I believe it is outside the oil pump death range. Moreover, he replaced the oil pump - is that possible with those in the death range?

If it's outside the death range, would you prefer it and its known qualities over the newer, unknown rig?
