Question Your next vehicle preference ?

Hi.
Let's say you sold your Disco II on an offer you did not refuse, or had damages beyond repair, or just died somehow.
Will it be a LandRover or what is tempting you to try ?
As this is a '99 to '04 forum, let's keep as an used 'next' vehicle choice. Perhaps a few years newer, but not too much, and for the same use as now.

Having just picked up a 95 lwb classic I think that is the direction I'd go. Still get ABS and with lockers who cares about TC. Also, much simpler to LS swap than a D2 so you get the power of a modern truck and the charm of a old rover....Other than that a new bronco or a f-pace (if I needed a daily but could still have a solid front rover in the stable).

Had an order for a Defender in, then production struggles coupled with personal climate convictions and sadly ended up cancelling the Defender and getting a new Model Y. It can help 'offset' our two Disco and their 13mpg appetites haha.

Hmm...if money was of no limit I would get a fifth gen Bronco with all the off road bells & whistles! (but really, I would probably also want an LR3 or LR4 if I couldn't get a DI or DII!).

Since the Dll is closing in on 25 years in production (and rules of engagement here require me to stay within off road capable vehicles...no 911's...which l've been spending to many hours looking at lately...lol)...importing a nice Dll, with 200tdi, 5 speed for an overland build would do. The 110 is fine for now, but someday, a few more creature comforts will be necessary or preferred...l'm getting soft in my old age.

Or an LR3.

I'd probably look for another D2 since I haven't had mine very long. Alternatively, I might look at FJ60s or RRCs, maybe even a D1 if I'm looking at older trucks. In the newer direction, I'd prob consider an LR4 as the amenities would be nice for the daily duties the D2 serves at the moment. The new Bronco might be on the list too but the waitlist is quite long and I don't really like buying new cars.

Good question. I don't know as of now how much bandwidth I will have in my future for a older project type cars. Decent chance the D2 will be the last. I have thought seriously about getting on the order list for the new Bronco and will likely do that and just wait it out. I have been a lifelong early Bronco fan and kick myself for all the opportunities I had in the last 30 years to buy one for $3k and didn't do it. If I made a list of projects car options it would look like this and not in any order of importance and $$.

Vanagon Synco Tin top.
80 series diesel Land Cruiser - import
Land Rover 110 pick up (crew cab)

Just went through this I was fueling, going to meet my Land Rover group a guy got talking to me about the Disco and wanted to know how much. I said 11,000 just off the top my head with no tent or load bars, he called his wife about a 15 minute conversation but she said no even after him trying the "but it is a Land Rover".

My thought was to order a LHD 04 out of Spain with a diesel 10,000 to 16,000 cdn shipped to the West Coast.

New automobiles are HIGHLY overrated..... Maybe "new to me", but I highly doubt I'll ever own anything past 2010 and that year is pushing it for me already. I'm an 87-04 LR guy so anything in that era will work for me. I've got a 95 D1 which fills my RRC desires as it's a 3.9L dizzy 14CUX model with many more advantages vs the 87-94 RRC setups. Serpentine belt, remotely positioned amplifier, last of the 14CUX firmware, No $1500.00 ABS pump like the RRC's, more room, and I absolutely love the D1/D2 dash. Then I have a 97 D1 which fills my GEMS desires, and then I have the 99 D2, 02 D2, and the 04 D2 all of which offer slightly different options across them to make each one unique to the other.

If I absolutely had to have something else I'd look into an older Import Defender from down under with a possible V8 and AC. I'd then just slap in some very comfy front seats (I've seen a 4 bucket seat setup using very nice seats which looked awesome). The newer stuff just doesn't honestly appeal to me at all. My wife's 2020 KIA Forte GT is a great little car, but all the auto BS honestly drives me nuts plus most engines these days to me sound like they're falling apart right off the lot... In fact my wife and I are selling the 2020 KIA Forte GT as my wife's grandmother passed away and left her a flawless 2014 Ford Edge with barely 23k on it. I drove it and I already felt better with normal steering vs electric, and none of that drivers aid stuff that is basically standard on all cars/trucks these days.

I also wouldn't mind an old Toyota 4Runner or an older Gen II Mitsubishi Montero (sadly you rarely find them in good shape anymore).

Out of all my LR's I'd have to say the 95 & 97 are the most fun to work on and extremely reliable. My 97 XD has been thru hell and it's a total rust bucket floor/fender wise, but it just keeps on going. Sure things will break, but I'd rather just fix em and keep on rolling vs go out and dump 65-70K on a Bronco 2DR.
