Head Gasket Repair 03 Disco
First, what year is your truck, does it have say and have you ever changed your plug wires yet?
Items you will want to still order, 8 mm silicone wires like STI's or Magnecor's, new soft spring t/stat, small container of head bolt thread lube, small tube of Blue Locktite, couple cans of carb cleaner, i tube of a good gasket sealant, anti-seize for the plugs and some die electric. I would also suggest you drain your coolant system and go green replacing the Dexcool and add a bottle of Water Wetter for the coolant.
If you have some questions, PM me your number and I'll call you.

By the way, my HG leaks at the back pretty good. I need to top off the reservoir regularly although not drastically...and I have great temps in this brutal heat and traffic. Very rarely over 200 at the absolute worst and usually about 185.
I would say 90% the RAVE manual however a few you tube videos and google for some questions and clarity.
Was certainly not easy but was quite happy with how smooth it went. The only real pain in the A$$ was torquing the two rear Head Blts closest to the firewall. The Drivers Side one was a really pain!!!
It now has a miss however so will check codes tonight I am hoping I just screwed up on the plugs!!

As for the RAVE...you used the overhaul section?
I need to get a torque. Will one suffice? What else should I be sure to have in your opinion.
I actually didnt use the overhaul section I used the ones above. I think this is essentially the same info however you had to jump around a bit ie Do the intake gasket etc, then rocker cover, then head gasket as obviously each of these needed to be removed to get to the HG. I am sure it does not really matter to much??
Regarding links, allot were just quick confirmations I needed that didnt say in the rave manual. At one point when doing the lower intake gasket it says to add gasket sealant in the cracks by the block. It does not say much more that this so wanted to be sure i was doing the right thing, after a few googles and checks on forums etc I found out. Another was removing the fan. I would do this first while the belt is still on. I didnt need any tools barring a cresent wrench big enough to get on the nut on the back. Take the guards off put the wrench on and turn the fan. Presto!! I did this with the belt etc off which is I am sure where you need the special tool however we just wrapped a ratcheting tie down (Strop/strap - Im from NZ sorry for any slang issues!!) around the belt pully on the back to lock it up. This is where if the belt was on we would not have needed to do this.
Other links/information were which way up does the rocker cover gasket go, this was self explanetory once I checked but the goover side fits the covers. This was a pain to get on though as when you turn this upside down it falls off. I read some notes on glueing this a little to the covers etc however I managed to get it sorted.
ummmm I guess most other small things I needed again were just general info when you scratch your head a little and want someone to confirm your thoughts.
As far as torque wrenches go, we had a 3/8 one from I think 5Nm to luke 35Nm, and a 1/2 one from 20Nm to 100+. You need a range from ~5to10 to say 50Nm this would be safe so if you can get one to do this great however am unsure you may need two also.
You definitly need 12point sockets for the exhaust manifold bolts and rocker cover bolts. Then good 6 point set for other items. I would say a half in drive set is best with knuckle joints and a good power bar. I used a 3 foot length of gase pipe. This made torueing up the head bolts a dream, however the two head bolts closest to the fire wall really sucked. The drivers side mainly. I recomend having a mate help. He can wedge something in to keep the knuckle joint as straight as possible to ensure the torque is going to the right spot other wise you just roll off the head.
Some other tips I have:
You read allot of posts about how to organise yourself, to be honest this was pretty easy, pretty much everything barring the Push Rods and Rocker shafts are self explanetory as to where they go. Each nut and bolt set I removed I put in a plastic zip lock bag and labelled. For the push rods I put each in it own bag and labelled P or D as in passenger or driver side and then 1 through 8 from front to back. For the Rockers i ties a cable tie around the passenger side one to distinguish which one it was this meant they could go in a big bag together. Everything else was pretty normal I guess.
I got the Miss fixed I checked the codes and plugs 3 and 5 where around the wrong way so a quick swap and away we go.
