Default MSD DIS-4Plus Dizzy delete

Are any of you guys running a MSD DIS system “Distributorless”.

Similar to the Megasquirt systems but not replacing the ECU, just the Dizzy and Coil etc… I’m trying to put together a system that will take out the dizzy and add individual coil packs. I’m having trouble figuring out how to trigger the spark, “the schematic for the MSD systems calls for setups I can’t make…”

MSD DIS-4 plus---- the part
Triggering Spark------ The problem

Any experience would be greatly appreciated!

It can be DONE!!

Well, found my answer, An MSD 6LS will do the trick.

I’ll have Individual coil packs, precise timing control and I’ll be able to get rid of my DISTRIBUTOR!!! 1 down side, fitting a Camshaft Position sensor, I will make some sort of set up using an old distributor or use some examples I found online "still need to drive the oil pump". I also need to fit a CPS, but that shouldn't be a problem. This should be an interesting project!

I assume no one here has fitted a Camshaft position sensor to a Buick 215?

Add a trigger to the dizzy shaft.

I was thinking along those lines. Fabricate a simple arm off the distributor, very much like the rotor for the distributor. The only things I've been thinking of…

A: How wide should the arm be? Aka length of time in front of the sensor.

B: If it needs to have multiple teeth.

Those are the two major problems, but other than that everything else is simple modification/customization. I know the sensor needs to identify between compression and exhaust stroke, so I was thinking a semicircle?

This is what your aiming for. This is a pic of Curtis Jacobson's Buick 215 Hall Effect (Nissan) cam sensor on a dizzy stick (Chevy 350). This is how he solved it. MSD 3 Pro setup.

you can always run a later timing chain cover, it will have a distributor hole and will drive the oil pump off the crank. or you can install a GM HID distributor all self container and there is only one wire to hook up.

I looked into that set up and it was a good idea/ definitely Something I want to do in the future, but for practicality on the trails it's not the smartest move. Right now I'm currently planning on water / methenol injection. I'm hooking up an MSD 6al digital to a MSD timing control along with an MSD tach adaptor to satisfy the ECU and Tach.

I ordered the wrong tach adaptor so now I'm waiting for the correct one, other than that I've got spark just no signal going to the ECU.

With this setup ill be able to adjust my timing from the drivers seat with a dial, and switch between water meth and fuel to just normal fuel injection with a flip of a switch.

If everything works out ill get cooler exhaust temps/ + 2 to 3 mpg and a healthier engine with the added cooling to the intake/ exhaust valves.

The MSD 6AL is running better than ever!

I’ve got it attached to a MSD tach adapter and timing adjuster. The rover made it through the harsh North East winter…. Passed with flying colors. Severe cold on Maines north coast!

I’ve been traveling annually, almost exactly 300 miles…. Up and down small mountains… on average I’ve been able to make the trip with almost 1 tank…. 21 gal tank… about 300 miles… so averaging 15 to 17 MPG… depending on RPM’s.
I’ve found that if I keep the RPM’s down to about 2k “60 mph” instead of 3k “+- 75mph” the MSD system really shows its benefits…. Getting closer to 20 mpg.

During the fall months I got 21mpg, the best I’ve ever gotten!!

I'm still tuning the timing and playing with the Water/meth.

Nice. What timing adjuster do you have? Do you still have a dizzy?
I have a 6AL-2 and 8910 tach adapter ready to go.
I wouldn't mind losing my dizzy if you found a work around. Thanks!
