Might be silly question -

can a 300tdi & transmission taken from a defender be swapped into a discovery 2?

 

Could it yes, but a td5 would be a more direct swap if memory serves me

 

Im told it’s really not easy to put the TD5 in there- was under impression the 300 being mechanical is an easier swap to make everything work.

Does anyone happen to recommend someone with experience or shop to do install?

 

Why wouldn't the TD5 be easier? I know it's probably set up for a RHD vehicle but it's ECU should easily accept all of the US 4.0 or 4.6 electronics

 

TD5 is the diesel that came in D2 from the factory.

The 300 tdi would probably be fairly easy to do as a whole if you are not concerned with retaining electronics

 

I spoke with a guy who has been importing both engines. He said that when you pull the motor - he doesn’t know anyone aside a shop in Colorado who has successfully done the swap working with ECU. I understood it to be having ECU flashed properly to accept new emissions and engine management.

he went on to say that 200/300 being mechanical was showing much more success in swapping.
I’d like to find someone local who has a little experience- any recommendations?

I have even see a re-manned 300 which is making more torque and HP then Td5. (M&D engineering)

 

In CO I don't believe we could swap a 300 into a D2 due to it being an older motor. It would never pass emissions on that fact alone. Something in the regulations that if doing a swap it must be from the same model range of the vehicle or newer. I also wouldn't bet against JC British or Roadside Werx from being able to successfully swap a TD5 in. Next issue is that the TD5 isn't import legal yet as it hasn't been 25 years (where emissions are required) or whatever BS import laws I'm missing. Obviously you can ship just a TD5 motor right now but I couldn't register the vehicle once swapped as you can't legally import and register a TD5 D2 from the UK for instance. Once the requisite amount of time passes I imagine the TD5 swaps will begin in earnest and prices will come down quite a bit.

 

Emissions laws in MA are a bit more forgiving. I’ve checked into this already. However - I did just learn about some red tape with the TD5 being a bit of a hassle to be an import legal diesel.

 

It has been done at least once up here, without issue 9000 ish Canadian all in, engine ECU and install.

The issue is not the TD5 engine and ECU it is all the ancillaries required to support the engine, I took a look at it in the event my block was toast.

As noted:

The engine is a direct bolt in

• The ECU needs to be swapped
• Engine mounts changed
• A few gauges added
• Fuel system purged - possibly the pump changed
• New rad
• There are some other bits but I did not get that far

 

Yep a few more years for them to be legal to import and I think this swap will be the new standard swap for the d2s. I know I'd love to have a turbo diesel especially with the elevations here.
