Default Careful where you get a replacement engine

Awhile back I took my LR4 in for service at a local shop. They convinced me to decarbonize the engine. From the time I left the shop it was never right and they were adamant it was just coincidental that a ring and compression in one cylinder failed afterwards. Because I loved my LR4, I sought out a replacement engine. The dealer sold only new ones for $25k, I searched all over the internet and found SharperEdgeEngines.com out of Jacksonville offering refurbished engine with a 12 month warranty and install kit for $9350. As it turned out, they only took the order - the order was fulfilled by another group that sells under several names (including raremotorcars.net - all rep'd by Mike Stevens out of Sun Valley, CA). I had it delivered to a reputable local shop an found that the install kit was incomplete. The check engine light was on and the shop explained that something is not right in the engine. They tried working with the supplier. I tried working with the supplier. They were impossible - and refused to honor the warranty. Later, I found others who had problems with these same guys.

If you're going to source an engine, do your homework on the supplier and ensure they are the actual source.

That sucks. Also sucks this all started with a scam service. Decarbonize an engine? This is not 1985. New oils and fuels mean there is zero need for that at all unless *maybe* you have an abused diesel. I scoped my LR3 with 230k miles. The tops of the pistons were pretty much clean of carbon across most of them and I have not done any treatments besides an oil additive for additional lubrication.
