Default 02 Freelander loosing coolant, HELP

After a 3 hour trip to Lake Erie, my Freelander with 60K miles over heated. I refilled with Prestone 50/50 antifreeze through the over flow bubble. Every 200 miles coolant is low again. I keep refilling intead of taking to the dealer (stupid, I know) now it is making a wierd blowing noise from the left side (when facing engine compartment) from under the coolant overflow bubble. any ideas? Thanks for any help

Changed the oil and it was not milky in color. I have been told it would show Antifreeze getting into the oil if the color was milky.

I had a similar problem, I had my car in park, with the engine running, and i looked down and the temp guage was pegged to the red. I was loosing coolant, but there was never a puddle under my truck.I refilled it every morning for a month or so, because as long as there was water in it, it ran fine, but then finally broke down and went to the dealership- where I found out it was the thermostat. The thermostat is very hard to get to and they had to take the top of the engine off, so it was about a $700 visit...

Yikes, $700! I was thinking it might be a head gasket leak and the whining noise was the water pump. anyone know how hard those two are to replace before i take it to the dealer?

What generally happens is that the thermostat base cracks leaking coolant on to the top of the engine and it burns up. Unitl your crack and leak become worse then you will notice it leaking onto the ground. I have replaced the thermostat on mine without taking it to the dealer. I also performed the task without removing the manifold. I would buy the thermostat, the tube behind it and the longer tue that runs towards the water pump. Replace all three at the same time. You will have to have a lot of patience, several extensions, small hands and swivel sockets. If you are not mechanically inclined then I would recomend taking it to the dealer. It wasn't easy but more patience was needed than anything. Good luck.
