Default 2002 freelander won't start

I know it is not much to go on but I was just given this vehicle and it turns over but does not start it has 190,000 kms the vehicle is very clean and well taken care of there is a weak spark and there is fuel the timing has been check and it is on it has the v-6 . I am just trying to pick the brains of the people who know where to look first ,I would just hate to see this vehicle go to the junk yard and I see from the consumer reports people give up on these cars very easiely . thanks for any help.

I can suggest a few places to start: pull a plug to see if you are getting fuel through the injector, or if it is only pressurizing the fuel rail. You should hear the fuel pump cycle to pressure from inside the vehicle. If the plugs are dry, then the ECU is not establishing the run sequence. I can't remember if the ECU does so by limiting fuel, ignition, or both.

All that said, if the plugs are dry, then you have a few things to check: crankshaft sensor, camshaft sensor, or perhaps it is immobilized. The latter can be checked by locking and unlocking the drivers door with the key. Not very common.

You should download the RAVE manual on this site or others if you have not already done so. Go to the engine management section description and operation and it will explain the series of steps in the start sequence and point out how the cam and crank sensor function and the location of each. Good luck.
