2002 Disco II Won't Start
I have a 2002 Discovery II. After driving it this weekend (03.31.2013), and getting home I went to park it and shut off the ignition but when I did the engine kept running (I think as the sound did not exactly resemble an engine running) so I turned the ignition back on then off. Now when I turn the key to start it nothing happened, except a faint click from inside the fuse compartment and it sounds like one under the passenger dash. The radio and clock dims when key is turned, then return to normal after I release the key. In an attempt to correct the problem, I have changed the battery, and starter but no change. Any help with direction to follow would be immensely appreciated.
Lights dimming means a large amp drain and a weak battery. Would want to re-check electrical connections, including all those in the underhood fuse box. Would disconnect the alarm switch for the hood. Would try to jump off with a second vehicle.
My 2003 Discovery II failed to start today. It has always been fine, but i seemed to notice a few days a ago, there was a little 'hesitation' when I started the engine one time. Yesterday was fine. Left the car in the garage, now it just won't start.
I can tell it's not battery. Dashboard can turn on ok.
When turn the key, can hear the fast paced tapping sounds somewhere behind the engine, but it won't start the engine.
Where should I be looking?
Today is Friday, sounds like tomorrow is the first Saturday I won't be able to drive my Disc.
Please advise!
Thanks
Tony

When you say it's not battery how do you know? The dash lights come on when you turn the key to position 1--ll that's telling you is there is enough volts power the bulbs. When you try and crank the 'fast paced clicking' sound you hear sounds to me like the starter solenoid not having enough power to stay energised. Sound like a flat battery to me. Charge it, see if she runs.
You were absolutely right. I used to think if low battery the battery light should be on.
When I tried again Saturday morning, the battery power was only able to turn on the GPS, not a single clicking sound could be heard anymore.
I replaced the battery, all was good. Thank you very much for your response.
