Default Any Freelanders worth considering ?

I have read through most of the thread for Freelanders and it seem that some very knowledgable people are recommending to stay away from the Freelander. My question is do all model years of the Freelander have the same problems or is it just limited to the 2001-2006 models with the 2.5 litre ? I cannot remember which year that LR changed from the Freelander to the LR2 (07 or 08). Does the LR2 have the same problems as the Freelander in terms of the motor ? I think that the LR2 went with a 3.2 litre motor built by Volvo. Were the motors in the Freelander really built in China as one poster had stated or was he just being sarcastic ?!

It is a shame if the Freelander has so many problems as I have two LR Discos in Europe and they are great. I guess the Freelander are better sellers in Europe as most are diesels with a better engine than we get in the US. I also heard problems with the brakes needing to be replaced every 15K - 20K miles. Is this due to inferior pads/rotors used by LR or their dealers or because the brake set up is under-engineered for the vehicle ? The brakes or electrical I could handle as well as parts but the motor and tranny would make it a no go.

Thanks for any advice,

Jeff
