Default Auto transmission problem - please help

Hello all, newbie here, after some help if possible.
My neighbour is a 70odd year old man who owns a 2001 (Y) Freelander ES V6 2.5L Petrol Auto, covered 23k from new, and the poor old man is having problems with his auto transmission and I was hoping you all might be able to help me help him. It goes into all gears ok, with the usual small jump that autos do, but when he pulls off and the Landrover starts to go up the gears, it jolts into 2nd and 3rd really hard, and does the same when you slow down. We have topped up the transmission fluid but it the problem is still present. Please, if anyone can shed any light on what the possible problem could be, and a solution before he ends up going to a garage who see the old man as a vulnerable target to make money out of for what might just be a simple problem.

I thank you in advance
Mark.

You really need to take the vehicle into a tranny shop and have them plug in and see what is wrong.
