Metal on metal sound similar to fan blades grinding. I am the not so proud owner of a 2004 Freelander and recently started having these sounds coming from the car. The closest description I can come up with is a metal on metal grinding sound that has like a thin metal sound similar to that of fan blades. This sound comes and goes but is becoming more present lately. It can happen in idle but mostly upon acceleration at slower speeds. It can last for a few minutes and then disappear. Any ideas out there? I should probably get rid of this beast but it drives so well in snow that it is hard to give up. Thanks for the help

 

there's a lot of rotating parts there....get under the hood and try to pinpoint where the noise is coming from...a video with some sound of the culprit may help us to help you...

Anyone else amazed when someone posts up with a running Freelander?

 

Ok so I will try and get a video or at least a picture of the area. But for the moment it appears to be coming from the left hand side of the engine (facing the car) on the side of the engine about in the middle there is a black plastic housing that seems to be the area of interest. I will get a more specific photo later, but maybe that would narrow our search a bit? Thanks for the help
